Hello I'm new to all this and am wondering how you tell which mint a US coin came from if there is no P, D or S showing on it. In particular I have this Morgan Dollar from 1878 with no mint letter on it. Thanks in advance
Your coin was struck in Philadelphia. All Morgan dollars that do not bear a mintmark were Philly-struck.
Morgan dollars made at Philadelphia have no mint mark on them. The 1878 Morgan was also minted at Carson City and can have the CC mint mark. Beginning in 1879, the Morgan dollar was also minted in New Orleans and include an O mint mark.
