    Hi Guys,

I'm pretty new to coins and I'm just starting to be able to identify a bigger base of most US Currency. But I'm having trouble with one specific coin that used to belong to my grandfather.

I really want to know the history of this token. I've been at it for 2 weeks searching the net for more information but I can't find any whatsoever. I've seen many Andrew Jackson tokens but... just not this one. I'm going to attach two pictures and hope someone might help me out.

I know the scans are blurry. It reads as following:

Front: And. Jackson President of the United States of America 1835
Back: The Gallant & Successful Defender of New Orleans

Thanks in Advance if anyone can shed some light on this.

1833 Andrew Jackson Hard Times Token. Engrailed edge (listed by Rulau as reeded edge). Brass, 26 mm, 4.7 gm. Dies by Robert Lovett Sr. Rarely offered in any condition, this issue is highly sought after by collectors of Hard Times and political token collectors alike. Struck in "medal turn" orientation.

What you have is quite rare and in relatively good condition..

    Thank you for your help.

Coins are fairly new to me. I used to go to auctions with my grandfather when I was younger and he'd let me pick out the fairly cheap ones for myself. But, he died in '88. I was cleaning out my closet and found the box containing a good bit of his coins.

I have no clue where to even begin with the foreign coins. I can identify the US coins but... This was one I couldn't get a handle on for the life of me.

If I may ask, where did you find that information?

I identified the token then found additional info at Heritage Auctions and eBay.

The token is worth (and I know this is a broad range) $250-500.

It makes no difference to the price but I believe you have a one of the "small shield" variety.

    Well.. Thanks again!

I think I might lurk around these forums on and off. I don't want to just come in and hound with questions. I kinda want to learn a bit as well.

I might consider selling items like this because coins aren't a passion.. But they are a growing interest ... However, I do have certain portions of the coin collection that aren't going anywhere.

With that said, I do have my own collecting passions and I know how exciting it is to get that sought after piece. And I'm sure someone somewhere would love something like this cause its kinda odd.

I had no interest in coins until I was cleaning out my father's old foot locker and found interesting coins and paper money. I then went through the process of identifying each one. My interest grew from there. Now I really enjoy collecting coins.

The numismatic world is huge and can be a daunting task to wrap your head around. It's simply impossible for someone to know everything even to know everything about a specific type (for lack of a better word) of coin. It took awhile to find a niche that met my requirements and could focus on.

Myself I would keep this one. If you do decide to sell it it may take awhile but there's certainly a buyer out there that would give you full value. And you are right, there is someone out there that would love to have this token.

What my father left was of quite modest value but I kept everything intact for the next generation.

The coins I collect for myself are also collected for investment purposes which tied together collecting and investing. Two things I enjoy.

Honestly, this probably belongs in the introduction section, but I'm actually trying to get together enough cash to buy my grandparents old house in a small mining town in pa. The whole town is being overrun with addicts. This place was a part of my childhood and I don't want to see this house get taken over. Don't get me wrong. I don't want to live there. I just want want the property. But, I'm looking at his coins and I want to buy back his house and.. Its tough. I don't know when my morality became this strong to be honest lol.

Anyway. Is there a certain part of this forum or thread for identification? I found some kind of Indo China Tea Plantation token today. Its pretty cool.

I don't want to spam your boards every time I find something.

If I'm trying to identify something and need help I've been posting them in the Coin Chat section without complaints so far. If you already know what it is and want to get its value go to What Its Worth section.

    Get the property. IMHO

    I grew up in Scranton.

    Thanks.

I posted this new token in that section.

I'm about 15 miles south of Hazleton. It has gone to Hell here.

Is something like this worth putting on eBay?

Or is it too limited of a market. I understand eBay is global but how many people would possibly be able to see this ?

I'd try eBay first and see how many bites you get. There's only one or two one Bay at any given time. You second bet is an auction house like Heritage Auctions. I don't know all the details about how Heritage works.
