It's a Millard Fillmore P Dollar with no shiny clad at all. It has a smooth edge but you can see the letters they are just faint. It looks like some letters are also misshapen or maybe just damaged but I am not sure. I don't see any marks that makes me think it was filed down and it does weigh 8 - 8.1 grams so I really don't think it has been messed with. Does anyone have any info about if these are actual errors? I showed it sitting to a regular Fillmore coin so the comparison can be seen better.
isn't the clad layer the shiny layer?? Maybe I am confused because the one to the right in the picture has no shiny layering. I sitting here looking at it and it is a dull gold color. Not dull like it wore off it is the same dullness all over.
the clad layer is the gold color, your dull coins just have their "luster" worn off from circulation....
these gold color coins will turn from a nice shiny gold color to a yucky brown color in time and anything condition in between .. the clad layer for US coins is a copper core bonded to an outer layer just like in the photo of the edge. you should be able to see the difference in the edge color...its very subtle but once you see it .. you see it a link to explain clad better http://coins.about.com/od/coinsglossary/g/cladcoinsdef.htm
There is no clad layer on Pres $'s. Just the 'color' They are not made like dimes, quarters & half dollars
yes there is a clad layer on SAC's an PRES dollars ... 77% copper, 12% zinc, 7% manganese, 4% nickel clad onto pure copper
