Looks like mechanical doubling (MD) on the profile.

what is supposed to be wrong with it ? all I can see is lots of bag and wear marks and some MD on Kennedys face

if it were MD, wouldnt it show under his nose as well? very skeptical to the replies because Ken Potter himself has seen this and says otherwise...its in the hands of ANACS right now. will post the result of that when i get it back next month.

another reason for skeptisism...so far, 3 coins i have posted and been told are MD, i have since sold to dealers as bona fide DDs and RPMs. some things are just not as they seem...and yes, sometimes, people are wrong, no matter what they think. oh well. CT is what it is

What did Ken Potter say about the coin? You said he "says otherwise", but pretty much anyone can tell that in this case, it's clear cut MD. It's flat and shelf-like, no notches. Doubled dies rarely occur on the profile of coins.

As for the coins you have been told were MD that you sold to dealers as "bona fide DDs and RPMs", well...I don't have much to say about that besides most brick and mortar coin dealers wouldn't be able to tell worthless doubling from a doubled die even in a side by side comparison (I speak from experience with many shops that have labeled coins as "double" dies when in reality they are not). Did the dealers specifically tell you they were errors/varieties, or did you present the coins to them as such?

In another thread, you posted 2 coins that the membership quickly attributed as worthless doubling, but you claim to have your coins "verified". May I ask who verifies your coins for you?

You really front loaded that Simon. "Why would you go and sell them to a dealer after being told by the knowledgable <sic> people of this forum that the coins in question were MD?"

I have not tracked what other coins are in question here, and you haven't specified, but the easy answer is the relative assessment of knowledgeable, between a buyer with cash in hand - having examined the coins IN HAND - making an offer and v someone who opines about the limited representation of a photo. How do you claim knowledge that so and so's opinion are better than unspecified dealers? You have some magical powers going on there :)

Got any thing you are using you can sell to me?

I do commend you for taking notice to my tone, which may have been a little harsh, and I edited my post accordingly.

The pictures here (and on the other thread regarding 2 supposed mintmark varieties) are clear enough in my eyes (as well as others, including variety and error experts that have been in the hobby for decades) to make an opinion based on observation and previously acquired knowledge on the subject. While it is true that sometimes things can be seen in-hand that cannot be seen in the pictures, I am commenting on what I can see (the mechanical doubling on the profile of the face), which does not have any distinctive resemblance to a doubled die variety.

I believe they are called books. I would recommend investing in a few. (But alas, I could not sell them to you. :) )

Anyways, to get back to the specific coin at hand:
the reason you are not seeing any doubling under the nose is because of the direction of the mechanical doubling. The doubling seems prevalent where there is more or less a part of the profile facing directly west...that is the direction of the doubling. While there are a few cases of multi-directional doubling, mechanical doubling usually is in a single direction. Since the underside of the nose does not face west (the direction of doubling), I don't think you would see doubling underneath it (at least that is my theory).

This is MD. There is no doubled die here, and I'd like to hear what Ken told you. Can you give us his exact words please?

I know Ken very well and he has been ill lately and he told me he is improving , I'm almost certain he would not say this coin is even close to being something it is not. I would ask him but I don't want to bother him right now. if this coin was a doubled die coin the doubling should show the strongest in the ends of Kennedy's hair at the top of his head.

Your half dollar does show Machine Damage Doubling...it looks like you are putting together quite a nice collection of MDD.

I was going to comment on the "die clash" under Kennedy's Ear but, really, why even bother since you've sold the coin to a Dealer.

Please, please, please, PM me the name of the Dealer you are selling your doubled die's to since I need to raise some cash!

I have quite a few of the following 1972-D coins which I'd like to sell:

The 1995 P half shows nothing but machine doubling. I also agree, knowing Ken for over 20 years, he would never call this anything but a form of machine doubling. He was one of the first to isolate and describe most of the other forms of worthless doubling.

You shouldn't throw names around when there are people here who really know the people being mentioned.

I, for one, would just like to see better photos of the coin before passing judgement. I can't tell much from what I see...

That being said, I think I've had something exactly like this pass through my hands at one point. I'll see if I still have it sitting in a tube somewhere...
