Does anyone know if an original 1795 draped bust dollar can weigh in at 26.294 grams? All specifications I can find lead me to believe it should be 26.9 grams. Also, the word "D O L L A R" on the edge lettering is spelled " U O L L A R " . Has anyone any experience with that abnormality? Thanks Randy in Atlanta
Howdy Randy - Welcome to the Forum !! The coin would have to have a lot of wear to lose a half gram of weight. And are you sure that it is a U and not just an edge ding that makes the D look like a U ? I mean it sounds like the coin could be a fake, but it could be real too. Pics would go a long way in helping get you an answer.
randy: Welcome to the forum, and don't go by the edge lettering to determine if the coin is genuine. The edge lettering was frequently 'screwed up'. I have a bust 1/2 that has doubled edge lettering, not a big deal. Also, others with many letters missing or partially missing. The weight is more important, and try getting it slabbed, that would end the problem.
