I am new at searching for error coins. I understand the whole thing about silver and gold value but get confused on what is really worth money when you find something that looks funny with a coin. If I post questions and pictures will someone really give opinions about value? I joined other discussion boards where no one seems to answer. Do people on here really share their knowledge?
You can count on an answer most excellent here. Be prepared for not hearing what ya want to hear though.........got pics?
It takes a while to learn the differences between errors, varieties and PMD (post mint damage), posting pictures here, and maybe getting a book or two, cherrypickers guide, and even the redbook will get you on your way.
Thanks, how do I just post a general question. Seems all I can figure is how to reply to my original post and can't locate a way to post something new.
Post the coin photos in either the "What's It Worth" or "Errors/Varieties" sections. Those who specialize in errors would be able to help you most. To get to another section, click "forum" on the top of the page.
if you post pictures people usually will respond. you understand about gold and silver coins if I understand you correctly then I am sure you understand the importance of reference material so the post you put up should be scrutinized to some degree too.
I have a 1960 Jefferson Nickel with no mint mark with error's that I can't find info on as being previously reported... so how do I know what is a real error and what isn't. They all look like errors to me but I am new at this and not sure. From what I can see on the coin is it is really bright and lustrous, It has DDO & DDR, mint errors, I can see stripes across the coin that go under the letters, strong doubling on the building & the background of all the letters has another layer of lettering, the images are crisp and very detailed, there is an indented area all around the outside edge. I can see all the doubled areas a lot stronger under a magnifying glass. I got this out of a row of Nickels given to me from the bank but it is a 1960 so not sure if that means it was circulated or not. Can anyone help me, I am not sure what to do with this coin.
your photos are too small too be able to see very good. anyway welcome to the forum. EDIT: there are many types of what is called mechanical doubling and die detoration doubling that looks similar to a doubled die coin but not worth much at all. you will need to learn how to tell the difference between MD and a doubled die.
I am not sure what to say about this coin. I have had a lot of opinions on what is seen. Under the loop I can see something under the D mint mark but can't tell if it is an S or another D. The S in cents looks like an 8. The 2nd U in PLURIBUS is covered by another letter making it look like a D... The tops of the 55 look doubled or smeared into the side. Their is several globs between the 1955, between the M and O in Monticello. The whole outside rim is smeared into the letters around the rim. Thought about sending for certified appraisal but not sure yet. Definitely some issues going on here but don't know what is true errors and what is post mint.
When I double click on the picture on here it comes up in large format. Can you look at the pictures that way and let me know what you think
I also have a 1970 dime with a circle around the middle of the head and double lettering of IN GOD WE TRUST
on your last coin this is damage fom being in circulation the dime has a circular scratch from a coin rolling machine , this is considered as damage
And I have MANY more coins with double letters, double dates, or off centered. My parents saved change for years I am going thru the ones they did not turn in for silver content to check for errors.
Post each and every one, Ladyjay, but be sure to do so with the large option. Thumbnails stink...........
