is it worthwhile to put packs of silica gel in a safe w' coins?,most are encapsulated/slabbed but some are early proof sets..i want to avoid contaminating them. i live in indiana and we have high humidity in summer. the environment is in a/c, but want best conditions as possible for them.... thank you....
Coin World has a column about protecting your coins, and she recommends keeping silica gel in the safe. In fact they (Coin World) sell packets that can be 'renewed' (dried out and replaced).
I have also been told by dealers that if you use a metal safe that reson bags like those used in sports are also effective.
i threw a couple silca gel packets in my safe. it keeps the humidity out. i've heard humitity tones coins and i really don't want my proof sets and old silver to tone!

One important thing is the location of your coins. If you live in a house remember that humidity is heavy and will settle to the lowest point of a house which is the basement. Most basements do not have good air circulation systems to get rid of high humidity. I too live in the MidWest and right by Lake Michigan. Humidity is rather high here also. Gel packs are nice but nothing can beat a thing called a dehumidifier. Mine goes all year and I keep my basement at below 30% even during heavy rains. If your save is in a basement, I suggest you invest in a dehumidifier. I've had coins here for well over 40 years and no effect on the coins.
