I was only 7 in 1964 when the Kennedy half came out and I had a good start on a Lincoln set. The job I had didn't pay well but I had to have one. I recall there were lots of folks going to the bank to get a new Kennedy half. It was years later before I knew people were saving silver coins. In about 1967 I was working the cash room in a large department store (S H Kress). I got to count and roll all the change for the next days tills. There was still a lot of silver but I only made about a dollar per day. I took my pay in Lincoln cents. My dad had to fire me. I was too slow because I had to look at every date. Those were some cool times. Wish I could talk with dad today about old times.
I got into bullion collecting about 3 years ago. I bought silver bars and 90% coins. Then I started looking more at the coins themselves... and it's been a downhill spiral ever since. I love searching out coins, finding treasures, looking at them in-hand. It amazed me how lovely a coin can be, either the design, the aging, or the tone. My grandfather was a collector and I'm now beginning to understand his passion. I've got my kids in the loop too - I've put coins from their birth years in 2x2" cardboard flips and they carry them around, looking at their "little coins." I can't wait to pass the collection on to them when the time is right, and get them interested in their own area of the hobby.
Once I joined a coin forum to expand my knowledge base so i could make purchases without fear of being ripped off. While on the forum I started browsing through the contests. I was a little late to the party, but if I got here on time I would have suggested that you upload 5 pictures of BU steel pennies. 3 of these pennies should be re plated and the other 2 normal. I think it could save some new collectors some money if they could identify these re plated cents. Then maybe they would have saved 30 bucks and not have a bunch of shiny plated worthless coins.

you can still participate in the other rounds. we should have had a separate thread for each round but this structure was forced on us by a gent who thinks he is clever by half.

Well well! Thank you Spock for that round..I personally enjoyed reading every single entry. I learned a bit about each entrant. I hope you are feeling better? And, just as Typical said, congratulations to everybody
Great job everyone! I feel that I know each one of you, at least a little. Thanks again Spock. This is turning out to be a very interesting contest. I can't wait to get zero points in round 3!
It may be an unwinnable round coming up, but let me know how I can get at least zero and 1/2 points from it, K??????
Everyone knows that buying coins is not the end of the world. Safely storing them is Your challenge is easy here. You just have to post on where you can buy United States Proof and Mint Set Storage Box Intercept Shield. Intercept shield has been out of business and the boxes are not available. To verify your claims i will be placing an order for those boxes. You get 5 points if you can do this. But i must warn you it is a fruitless task. I already tried. This exercise will take you to many a dealers website and be a helpful resource in the future. There are other intercept products available but you need to find proof and mint set boxes. OR You can tell me of an alternate solution that is as good as intercept shield. It has to be in the same price range or lower. It has to have the same storage benefits. You can come up with your own solution too. You will get 0 to 5 points depending on how much i like your solution. Bonus points - You can attempt to do both of these challenges and get a maximum of 10 points. You have until the fourth of November to get your entry in. You may only have one entry in the contest but you can post your thoughts on the alternate storage solutions provided by your fellow contestants but there will be no back and forth that is only one one contest entry and one thought entry allowed. Also no points for thoughts and no points for repeating what someone else has already posted before you whether it is the dealers name or the storage solution. From round 4 we will have negative points and a question that not even the us mint has been able to answer so far
i missed typical first entry so he gets 2 points for that and now his total is 7 points. Thanks for pointing it out.
ALTERNATE SOLUTION As this appears to be an impossible witch hunt to locate proof/mint set boxes, the only solution I can conjure up is to identify the technology used and find other industries that utilize it in the same manner as coin preservation. I have located a possible solution in the same price range with out extra leg work required of developing a new product to the marketplace. http://www.interceptjewelrycare.com/store/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=61 As this product is displayed as used for silverware, The dimensions are similar to the proof/mint set boxes consistently listed as discontinued and or unavailable on redirected websites.
I am able only to give you an IDEA.. Post an ad in the WANTED category of Craigslist for your area. If you want me to look in my area for them, I will do so for you. Lucy
