is it worthwhile to put packs of silica gel in a safe w' coins?,most are encapsulated/slabbed but some are early proof sets..i want to avoid contaminating them. i live in indiana and we have high humidity in summer. the environment is in a/c, but want best conditions as possible for them.... thank you....

Coin World has a column about protecting your coins, and she recommends keeping silica gel in the safe.
In fact they (Coin World) sell packets that can be 'renewed' (dried out and replaced).

I have also been told by dealers that if you use a metal safe that reson bags like those used in sports are also effective.

you might want to buy the boxes from intercept it will prevent toning butthey can be expensive.

One important thing is the location of your coins. If you live in a house remember that humidity is heavy and will settle to the lowest point of a house which is the basement. Most basements do not have good air circulation systems to get rid of high humidity. I too live in the MidWest and right by Lake Michigan. Humidity is rather high here also. Gel packs are nice but nothing can beat a thing called a dehumidifier. Mine goes all year and I keep my basement at below 30% even during heavy rains. If your save is in a basement, I suggest you invest in a dehumidifier. I've had coins here for well over 40 years and no effect on the coins.
