Hello, I am new to the site and I must say that this is a nice forum. Loads of information. I was wondering if I may get your guys opinion on a coins value. It is an 1873 trade dollar and it looks like it was minted at the carson city mint. Any ideas/opinions greatly appreciated. Thank you.
I did the magnet test and the ping test and the magnet did not stick and it "pinged" like silver. What about it looks wrong? Thank you for the input btw
First Welcome to Cointalk . I should be on my desktop to give a answer. I hope someone helps . Before I cir back in am. Plus Alabama Tennessee game about kick off. Roll Tide.
Could you try doing just some pictures and not scans i jsut seems like the stamping isnt right and i know trades have been faked a lot i cant say 100 percent either way but natural pics would help !!
Absolutely! And thank you for your help. I am not near the coin right now, but I will later. I posted in the us coins forum under a thread how to spot a fake trade dollar and everything seems to be on the up and up but I just wanted to make sure. I found this coin in a box with some other old coins and was just curious. I will upload some better pics tonight. I have an older all in one scanner, so the dpi only goes up to 600 =/
Yes it affects the value a lot idk if you know about stabbed coins but if its real i would be a details grade which would hurt value anywhere from 25-50 percent sometimes more but rarely i will look forward to your images later !!
Before you bother with other photos, and beyond anything else, my first suggestion would be to take a very close look at the mintmark(s).
I appreciate the input. I live in somewhat of a rural area and am not sure of a local coin shop, but I can see I'm going to have to have this thing evaluated in person. Thanks to all for their input
The CC mint mark troubles me. The Cs should be smaller and more closed than the ones on this coin. If that dull color is relatively accurate, I would question the coins authenticity.
