just found a nickel in the trash out of an old vacuum and its a buffalo nickel but I cant see the date so I was wondering if anyone knows of a trick I could use to possibly see the data I think I could see it if I had a magnifier or something its from p so let me know what yall think.
Slap a little of this on... works for me! http://www.wizardcoinsupply.com/product/nic-a-date.html Here's an example of buff I had with "no date"... and now it's a 1917 after a little "nic-a-date":
You can also throw it in a glass with some vinegar and a bit of salt. That's how I get my no dates to show.
Will that also work for silver coins? I have a walker that I can't make out the full date on. The only digit I can see is a 2. So I know it's from the 20's because of it's position 192?.
I leave mine in until I can tell the date. Usually takes ~24hrs for me to be able to be able to ID for sure. Sometimes less sometimes more. Also, one time I had a bunch taking a bath and it turned the vinegar blue. I changed it and kept going until I could read the dates. FYI - This method doesn't work all the time. If the coin is too worn it won't work.
That's based on opinion. I personally don't like the ones that just have the date restored. I don't think you could do the vinegar thing on just the date, only nic-a-date.
