As for the worst, I'd say California (my home state) - it needed the Golden Gate Bridge or something like that. I also dislike Michigan (my favorite state - my mom grew up there, I've never lived there but I love their sports teams) - it should have had a car on it or something. Those are my least favoirte since they're the two most important states to me so I have to be picky. I don't really have a favorite but I think 2007 is the best looking year so far, I really like all 5 of those. It also appears that they get better as they go so 2008 will be great.
My Thread I ran a thread on this subject on Dec. 18, in case anybody wants to go back and look at it. I picked the Texas design as best because of its elegant simplicity. (I could almost believe RANCH HAND plagiarized my comments on it in the current thread, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he's not guilty.) I fault myself for the judgments I made in the previous thread because I didn't have all the designs in front of me when I wrote it. I had seen them all, but didn't plan to keep them all, so I had let many of them go and naturally didn't remember them vividly when I wrote the piece of 12/18. Because of that, I shouldn't have made the judgments I did in the previous thread. Since then I have again seen New York, with its Manhattan map and magnificent Statue of Liberty, and New Jersey, with its well-done Washington Crossing the Delaware, and a few others I should have mentioned favorably in my previous thread. I still stand by Texas as the best, but it has several close competitors. And I still name Wisconsin as the worst. I'm sorry, Wisconsin partisans, but that silly cow makes a laughing stock (no pun intended) of the whole state.
Is it just me, or does the New Hampshire "Old Man of the Mountain" look suspiciously like "The Thing" from the Fantastic Four? I say, if the best your state can come with is a goofy looking rock formation, your state may be a candidate to be ejected from the union altogether.
I have many favorites but enough of the State outlines already. Many states like Texas, Michigan, Georgia really missed an opportunity. As a Mustang fanatic (cars that is) I really like the Nevada design....Go to http://www.quarterdesigns.com/ to see all designs in a single snap shot.
I have to disagree. I kinda like the California quarter. I beleive, correct me if I'm wrong, it is a scene from Yosimite. And having traveled to most of the tourist attractions in CA, including the Golden Gate Bridge,, I must say that Yosimite is probably the most beautifull place in CA, and probably one of the most beautifull places in the country. Just my opinion.
You might think that but I don't know if Californians would agree (that sounded really rude, that wasn't my intention). I have travelled quite a bit in my life (Ireland, England, France, Spain, Portuagal, Mexico, all over the US and California, etc.) but I've never been to Yosemite. It's close enough that I could go there for a weekend but I've never been there. The Golden Gate Bridge isn't that great (maybe because I've seen it a ton of times) but it is probably the first thing people think of when they think of CA (other than Holywood, Disneyland, and other stuff that has no place on a coin). The coin also mentions John Muir but I doubt most people/Californians even know who he is.
Yes, I know what your saying catbox. But I liked the John Muir/Yosemite theme, and my relatives in CA did as well. I guess mainly we were all very happy that it had absolutely nothing to do with Hollywood and Disney Land. I don't know.. To each his own. New Hampshire is still BY FAR my least favorite.
Check out the proposed New Mexico quarter designs...."Birthplace of the Atomic Bomb"? Now THAT'S edgy! Alburque Balloon Festival??? Not so much.
Unless you are from New England. I think almost every person living in the region has been to NH to see "The Old Man on the Mountain". Too bad it collapsed a few years ago. The sillouette of the old man is also used on NH's liscense plates. It's a very popular state figure and i could see why they would go with that design.
I find that CT although only an allegorical representation is the best of the state quarters, the rest are crap designs.
AHHH.... and some people thought the state quarters would not be popular. I love it. Think i will complete my proof and mint state collection
I actually like the John Muir quarter, Its my favorite coin. I was able to meet the designer of the coin, and he created a nice artistic sketch of the coin for me, I framed it and it looks great with my John Muir quarter.
I'd have to say Wyoming is the worst. Could they have put any less work into it? Looks like they forgot to finish the horse and rider.
I think the Texas state quarter could've been better. My favorite is probably the North Dakota, and I love the hawk on the Iowa quarter, they could've really ran with that design. Edit: Wanted to add something about an ugly state quarter... Florida is ugly. Same with Alabama and Wyoming.
Lets talk about the bad state quarter designs Wouldn't it be easier to talk about the few good designs?
