I haven't had one of these in a long time and I may be buying 2 sets this weekend. How much are they going for these days? I couldn't find any info on them. He wants 220$ for both

:) This thread takes me back a little. Twelve years ago I bought a set in a very nice wood case lined in blue velvet, with each coin in a Kointain, and all of them 66s or 67s and each one beautifully toned, for my son when he was collecting Jeffs. Paid $30 for it. And I thought that was a lot !

So I am guessing 130? I am trying to be a fair honest dealer. I don't want to rip anyone off nor sell over retail like the Littleton coin company.

Well 12 years ago the coin collecting hobby nearly died off entirely. I believe a major decline started in 1996 or so. If only coins where that cheap today.

Well I definitely would not agree that the hobby nearly died off in the '90s, but it was most definitely a bear market back then. In '99 things began picking up and by 2001, 12 years ago, is when the bull market started in earnest. Only to fall off a cliff in 2008. But it was the best bull market we've ever had.

As a general rule, bear markets typically last 8-10 years. And bull markets typically last 3-5 years. But that bull market lasted 8 years and you could argue for 10. It was unprecedented.

Please understand that I am not saying that this is what you're doing, but you do realize that overgrading, intentional or not, is just as much of a rip as overpricing, right? My point is that if you wish to be fair and honest, price is only one part of the big picture, and with all due respect, whenever "gem" is thrown around as the supposed grade for an entire set without any kind of proof, it is usually best to take it with a grain of salt.

If, and I mean IF every coin in the set/sets is at least a 65 by accepted standards, the above price is not unrealistic. However, for a set of generic "uncs" of varying grades, it is quite high. If I remember correctly, unc (or generic "BU") war time nickel sets are listed in the CDN weekly at somewhere around $70 bid with a minimal spread, so depending on actual conditions, this may be a reasonable place to start.

What I think is most important here is that at $220 for the pair, you need to ask yourself if your grading abilities are truly up to par, because if they are not, and the coins are not what you're hoping for, you very well could end up buried unless you're willing to fluff the coins into being whatever you need them to be. With that said, and even if all are legit gems, or unless there is something special hiding in the sets, $110 a pop is high if you're trying to pay wholesale and walk with a profit.

If possible, and if you've any questions about the coins themselves, please post quality photos of the sets before you buy.

There is not much that I can definitively say from those photos other than that at $110, I'd politely tell the seller to pound sand, but perhaps Lehigh can be of more assistance as these are his specialty. To be totally honest, I don't have a good feeling and am left with more questions than answers; even with the poor photos, my impression is that on average (and even if all were uncs), the coins are not what most semi-serious collectors would want, and even if they did, the best you would be looking at retail is somewhere close to ask, but possibly less. In years past I've sold a lot of such sets, and unless put together be a discerning eye, most are usually dime a dozen material that often sell retail for back of bid (face to face) or were placed in sets because subpar coins can sometimes be easier to dump this way.

Again, I would go with whatever Lehigh may say, but if you are still interested at any price, firmly request that he provide you with better photos. As it stands, this looks to be more of a sucker bet than anything else IMO.

I canceled the deal with him and lost him as a supplier. I was seing stuff on my website for him to make commission and now I don't have that. I need new suppliers. Anyone you recommend?

Wait, he wanted to sell you 2 war nickel sets at retail prices and then completely cut you off when you didn't want to waste your time trying to make a small profit on a very common product. Are you sure you are giving us all the information here?

At Teletrade, NGC 66 sets are listed at some frequency at $280 + vig, but I would guess they go begging about half the time.

Get a few opinions first. I myself have been selling some things on CT and locally to some buyers, and opinions vary set to set, coin to coin. I have been learning on my own for a year now, and still do not know as much as I would like to. I did make some good connections here on CT that I can ask and get a pretty straightforward, accurate answer regarding price and grade.

I am selling one of these sets, and 3 different people told me 3 different values for it.

A few people around my area are selling these sets for $60-85.

    Hope this helps...
