Hey, I actually managed to tick-off another box => yup, I found a coin from the fairly obscure 900-999 AD century ... => man, it is always a very cool feeling when I decide to venture-out into virgin-powder territory!! Amazingly => the hammer-price for this cute lil' coin was only $65 ... so, I was fairly happy with today's score!! (ummm, I realize that a few of you may not consider this to be a triumph, but regardless, I am filing this away as "oh fricken yeah, baby!!") ... anyway ... I like you guys => here is the first of two new coins ... enjoy!! Leo VI the Wise. Æ Follis Constantinople mint Struck 908-912 AD 886-912 AD Diameter: 25 mm Weight: 6.40 grams Obverse: Crowned bust facing, holding akakia Reverse: +LЄOҺ/ ЄҺ ӨЄO ЬA/SILЄVS R/OmЄOҺ in four lines Reference: DOC 8; SB 1729 Other: 6h ... rough red-brown surfaces
Yah, I realize that "the degree of wear and such" on a coin is a totally personal opinion (point taken) => however, I did think that this coin had quite a unique, yet an attractive quality (again, to me anyway) ... sadly, other than knowing that this coin is from an era that I did not yet own a coin, combined with the fact that I thought that this coin kinda rocked, I don't know too much else about his cute ol' reddish coin!! ("yet")
Nice coin - I wanted to do a "century set" a while ago but couldn't find something different enough that I really liked from the 900s, but this would fit the bill.
Hey, thanks for your comments, AncientJoe ... Ummm yah, I feel a bit responsible for dragging you into that other thread's blood-bath (that was certainly partially my bad) ... I hope that you realize that I think your coins are "top-drawer" and that I love hearing from you (whether it's good, or bad comments!!) oh, and I wish that I could give you a few bad comments every now and then ... dude, you really should slum and buy a sweet ol' cull every now and then (kick-it old school) ... just jokes (thanks again for posting) ... coin-on!!
Very interesting! I have some Byzantines coming my way and with the help of online resources and a catalog (thanks, Anoob!) I look forward to learning about them. Hope some are as nice as this.
I love it all the front facing bust details are in tact. Now that is $65 well spent. The akakai is clearly a shake weight. Nice clear reverse text. How much nicer of a Byzantine bronze can you get? Well done.
Wow Steve you sure been branching out lately, love this coin it has so much detail..real winner..looks like a little doubling on the reverse...very cool..
I ran into the same problem. I opted for a miliaresion of John they look super nice in high grade. Byzantine Empire John I Tzimisces 969-976 AD ref:SB1792
Nice looking coin, the details are still pretty sharp. And for that price you can't really go wrong. what is an akakia? Never heard that from any rpg games.
Coincidentally => My Bro-in-law just had a boy (three or four weeks ago now) ... hey, the lil' dude is super-cute (and he's silent as a lamb ... he's an awesome lil' dawg!!) => yah, and because I'm creepy uncle stevex6, I really have been keepin' tabs on my lil' God-child (he actually seems pretty cool) ... I'm much more of a dog-guy, but his little human definitely has my attention ... ... I hope that lil' N-Born is bringin' it as well!!
Curious? => I should know, because I led a thread that asked this exact question ... => wait, I'll look-back in my data-banks to find a quick answer for you guys ... ... ummmm? ... la-la-ala-la-la ... ummm, but sadly, I am like an old machine that needs continual protein-input ... awww crap, yah I'm an old goat!! => I have no answer!!
Yah, I'm gonna go to bed => but just for the record ... => that new coin of mine is super-cool (it's sweet' like candy!!) Tomorrow ... is coinnumba-two
In Byzantine, I suppose the Leo VI is the best looking coin of the century. My Constantine VII is a real mess with the overstrike leaving as much of the Romanus I coin as it erased. Considering the politics of the period, this may be appropriate. I'v always been fond of my fourree of Basil II & Constantine VIII but their dates 976-1025 crosses into the next century. Another choice would be a Shahi like this Khudarayaka 903-915 AD. The most common Samanta Deva could be in the 900's also but some may be earlier so maybe it would not be as great a choice. IMHO, a century set would be best if it included a wide range of places as well as the dates and if the coin used were from a place that was significant in the world at the time. 960 saw the start of the Northern Song in China which might also be a good choice as long as you found one of the early rulers.
Great lookin' coins as always, my friend ... => wow, I'm lovin' your Leo VI the Wise (you have good taste)
that's one of my favorite byzantine coins. super details stevex. here's mine, one of my fav coins period...
