I took the plunge and big in my first Frank S Robinson auction. With that sale he sent out an e-mail for 'budget' coins. He already has himself as a repeat customer in my eyes just after his budget sale and how he operates. While there may be no pictures for the coins in his budget sale I am happy with how they turned out. Also this is the fastest I have ever received coins from the states. I must admit I felt like a newborn shark going after a whale. All of the adult sharks knew the drill and were in and out so quickly I am surprised I walked away with anything. I know as soon as the e-mail comes to me next time to read quick and order even quicker! I need some help with the Hadrian since I can't find an exact match to the type. It is a Sestertius for sure and appears to have the IMP CAES DIVI TRA PARTH F DIVI NER NEP TRAIANO HADRIANO AVG legend however I can't find a match for the reverse. All of the FORT RED reverses with the obverse legend have the SC below the FORT RED. This one has it between Fortuna's rudder and the goddess for the S and the C on the other field. The Gordian III shouldn't be too hard to ID for me but that will happen a bit later since I don't quite have time to do it tonight. I am happy with both coins. I don't think the Gordian will stay will me long though since I already have a better example. I am slowly buying more quality than quantity but every now and then these budget examples slip through!
I believe the Hadrian to be RIC 541a. C 751 var. BMC 1110. Look at: http://www.acsearch.info/record.html?id=666363
Bing, that's what I thought too but the SC is in the wrong location. On mine the S is between the Rudder and Fortuna with the C on the other field. All of the coins that I can find with the obverse legend as it is with the FORT RED reverse has the SC in exergue beneath the FORT RED
Myself... over the years, over the decades... and I admit that I am not a collector (I write), but I have to say: SAVE YOUR MONEY!! DON'T BUY IT!!! Do not give in to the addictive urge to acquire a coin because you need the endorphin rush. Save your money. Plan ahead. Buy carefully. Acquire coins worth owning. Use the Force, Luke.
I particularly like the early Hadrians with long legends, nice coin! As I mentioned in an another thread, I was reluctant to buy anything from that sale sight unseen, but you seem to have made out quite well.
I know where you are coming from kaparthy but I am a huge fan of minimalist art and these coins are like those to me. I love 'lowball' coins that you know what they are but are just an outline of what they once were. I value an appealing lowball coin just as high as an MS coin. While I do save for quality coins I have two Hadrian Sestertii like this one and I will buy them everytime if the price is right.
I agree in general with your advice, Michael, but "worth" is entirely subjective. I've bought plenty of bargain coins of lesser grades that are worth a great deal to me numismatically.
That hadrian is nice. I went through the list when it was emailed too but nothing really grabbed me to wanna buy, even the cheap lady denarii. Sometimes I am too cheap.
JA I was hesitant too and it cost me a couple coins cuz some other collector snapped them up. I figured based on Franks reputation and the price of the coins, and the description worst case is I return or sell the coin and make someo of the money back.
Huh => I actually find kaparthy to be a bit of a pain ... Dude, if you don't collect coins and all you do is merely "write", then I suggest that you don't hang-around and irritate my coin-friends if and when they decide to buy a coin that you feel is not up to snuff ... => awww damn, did I actually say that out loud? ... man I'm sorry, I meant to say, "Hi K-dawg, you sound like you're an awesome guy"
Ah Steve there is no reason to be harsh he is entitled to his opinion and has an large base of knowledge behind him. He is not being irritating merely just expressing his opinion. I really enjoy his posts they are usually highly informative. I am just a humble coin collector and I buy what interests me and what is within my budget. If I saved and bought an XF Hadrian sestertius of the same type I would only be buying 2 coins a year. I like my coins and regardless of what anyone says for my coins only I make the decision on what to buy ( and maybe the gf if I am spending too much money)
Okay, my bad ... perhaps I jumped to your defense too hastily? I merely recall a similar type of kaparthy-response aimed at another member, who ended-up taking offense to his comments (unfortunately, I did not jump to his defense and later felt poorly that I had stayed quiet) ... but apparently I jump-out and defend at the incorrect instances!! kaparthy => I apologize if I've read too much into your comments and if I've incorrectly read them as being aggressive and/or unwelcome.
Whiz4, i for one think your two coins are awesome, there well centered, great color and have great details..to think for over a thousand years a coin could hold up this well..Your happy with them and that's all that matters..
As usual, the maxim "It's better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt" has been blithely ignored by one of the responders in this thread. Kaparthy's recommendation to buy only higher grade coins is not an uncommon attitude when collecting coins, and he's entitled to promulgate his opinion in an objective, non-offensive manner (which his post mostly does). Similarly, Whizb4ng's orientation toward buying coins that appeal to him (regardless of price or condition) is equally valid and probably reflects the attitude of most of the collectors in the Ancients category. His response is well-reasoned and diplomatic, and certainly helpful in providing some insight and understanding into why collectors might purchase coins that others consider less-than-collecting-grade quality. Although these coins may be different from the ones that I would consider collecting myself, I find them interesting (especially the Hadrian) and am glad they have been posted here. What I do find inexcusably offensive, however, is the =>me-me-me, =>always-have-to-post-something-in-blue response that follows. Stevex6's personal attacks on Kaparthy are boorish, childish and thoughtless, and have no place on this forum. His transparently disingenuous attempt to "apologize" within the very same post in which he launches this personal attack is just mind-boggling. Having a different point of view about a coin is fine; personally attacking someone for this point of view is completely uncalled for.
Original poster posts coins, is happy with them. Another poster states "Do not buy the coins". A third poster calls him on it, merely suggesting he not make such comments and annoying his "coin friends". Not to mention the third poster since apologized, before your (Ides) lengthy post calling him "a fool". In that apology was referenced another time where the "do not buy the coins" poster caused insult in a similar scenario. So who is boorish in this scenario?
This thread has me all riled up. I'm going to hitch up my chariot and go pillage Canada. Who's with me!!?
