Sorry, but the glare is making it hard for me to grade. Based upon the reverse I am betting higher than Jello's grade, but I cannot be sure. Either way I agree cleaned, and probably harshly. Overcleaned at a minimum.
Thanks guys. The flash does bring out a lot more of the surface cleaning than under dimmer light. I purchased this for $70 a few months back. Fair deal or no?
Depends on the grade and the surfaces sir. Without better photos I really cannot comment. The 54 is fairly popular because its a type coin, with the arrows. So it always has more demand than say a 58. As a background, I used to collect this series in XF/AU uncleaned condition, so I have seen lots of them over the years and am fairly knowledgable of the series.
haha sir? you're aging me! =) I need to invest in something better than my iphone for a camera. They are quite a nice series. Best looking half IMO, tied with the walkers.
I was raised properly. I fully intend to make sure my two small sons call everyone sir or ma'am as well. I agree in higher grades SL coins are fairly attractive. I never liked the reverse much, but thought the obverses in VF up were attractive coins. Unfortunately, the definitive book on the series, Wiley Bugart, is a pretty expensive book nowadays.
Thanks for all your help Medoraman! I figured these pics would show detail better, just had a harder time getting the damn coin in focus
XF/AU details. Likely has been harshly cleaned in my opinion. Value? Hard to tell without really good photos, you may have overpaid a little. Coins with problems (such as cleaning) sell at a significant discount to what a problem free example would sell for.
Kinda sorta.... Mr. Buggert is in the process of releasing a six volume set (IIRC), including marriages, which is and/or will be the definitive reference(s); not to take anything away from the original book, of course. You're right about a physical copy being quite pricey, but for anyone who can live without, the old Stella site still offers online for free. http://blog.davidlawrence.com/index...omplete-guide-to-liberty-seated-half-dollars/ As for the OP's coin, from what I can see it looks to more towards the Ch end of VF in details. If he plans on keeping, it may be wise to let it develop a heavier tone. While once a problem, always a problem, this should make it a little more appealing.
