Hi all. I just got this in change from McDonalds. I set it aside for the off coloring. I thought maybe it was toning but now am not so sure. There are heavy striations going NNE/SSW on the obverse throughout both the fields and the devices. I thought perhaps it was an improper alloy then and weighed it. Bingo: 5.73g as opposed to the 5.67g weight of a normal statehood quarter. What is the mint tolerance for weight? Is this something more than simply a toned 25c coin?
I would think 5.73 would be within mint tolerance. Not really seeing anything out of the ordinary with the coin.
perhaps improperly annealed planchet? similar to this 2005 nickel? http://www.moderncoinmart.com/2005-...planchet-ngc-ms65-new-england-collection.html
According to the replies here: http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/topic.asp?topic_id=131018 It could be. It is darkly greyish in color and has luster. I posted it to the error coin information exchange. We will see what is said...
Awesome! Mr. Diamond agrees that "improper annealing would be the most likely explanation." Score! Read it here: http://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/errorcoininformationexchange/conversations/topics/27336
