hi i found some old coins from the british period in india. i need to identify a couple and get historical backgrounds on most. can anyone help?
Post some pictures if you can. Alternatively if you can't wait, Don's homepage might be able to give you a rough idea: http://www.worldcoingallery.com
2 coins hi here are 2 of the new coins i got. one is quite easily identified..the 1947 one. could it be one of the last set of coins minted with india under the british? the 2nd i couldnt tell at all.
2 more coins the first says east india company but all the other east india co. coins that i checked up on, looked a lot more evolved than this. the 2nd hyderabad coin- how old would it be? and its worth?
The first coin is a very common 1947 1 Rupee. The second coin I cannot identify,as I cannot read Arabic. The third piece isn't a coin at all.The Hyderabadi coin is dated AH1362,regnal year 33. Here's a couple of AH to AD date converters; www.sizes.com/time/cal_islam.htm & http://prayer.al-islam.com/convert.asp?/=eng Aidan.
more coins! disappointed to learn that the east india co. coin isnt a coin at all! it did seem kind of suspect. but why would it have half anna on it? what would the other coins be valued at? and here are two more coins- one is a 2 anna 1918 coin.. any worth? i have a 1919 one as well. and the other belongs to the gwalior state..that any value?
Sorry.. I'm a bit late... I was with my newborn girl for a while.. Aidan is dead right about the Half Anna. Its not a coin at all. These are temple tokens, considered many as sacred and are minted by some temples in India. Infact, they are minted now also.. It is worth less than a dollar here in India. The picture on the coin is the God Hanuman (Monkey God). Another such token/coin is the 'Puthukkottai Amman Cash. I have come across this one a lot of times on eBay. Infact, these are minted by a temple in Tamil Nadu (south India) State and they continue issueing the same even today.
Good job guys. This is one of many areas that I know virtually nothing about. Some of you who are regulars know that there's a running inside joke here on CTF where any coin that can't be identified,is automatically an Indian temple token so it's refreshing when one actually appears. Nice stuff amateur1024 and welcome to Temple Token Talk.
are these real? I am scared by the low prices http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...MEWA:IT&viewitem=&item=260070130031&rd=1&rd=1 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=190066586981&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=009 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=190066595276&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=009 Please advise thanks.
They are all okay... But I think you can get them for lesser price. The Indian silver Rupee coins (British India) are not that costly, the only exceptions being the 1911, 1938 and 1939 coins. Also, some minor varieties (William and Victoria - depending on the number of berries and mint marks) are quite rare. You can get the 1911 in UNC for about 50 to 75 $, 1938 for 40 to 60$ and I've never seen a 1939 coin.
The silver 1 Rupee dated 1911 is very sought after, because it was rejected by the people,as the elephant in the King's Order of British India collar looks like a pig, which is an animal considered to be unclean by both Hindus & Muslims. They were withdrawn,& those that were cashed in,plus the unissued coins were melted down & recoined. The other silver coins of 1911 aren't as popular as the 1 Rupee, even though they have the 'pig' elephant in the design. Aidan.
Where should I buy them from? I agree that 1911 is a key date coz of the pig. This is the 1911 target that i am practising on. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...MEWA:IT&viewitem=&item=220067102686&rd=1&rd=1 I hope to heaven that these are real.
Spock1k,you can contact that Todywalla at the Bombay address given on that link that Biju (Spiraltreet) has posted. You can click on the 'Contact' tab in the website at top right. Aidan.
these are the other coins i was planning to buy. if anyone knows that they are fake please let me know. thanks. If some of you would take the trouble to grade the coins it would be great as well. Appreciate it. http://cgi.ebay.com/1918-SILVER-1-R...ryZ45138QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...MEWA:IT&viewitem=&item=200063791924&rd=1&rd=1 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...MEWA:IT&viewitem=&item=180070503921&rd=1&rd=1
