I sold a 20th anniversary 3 piece set on ebay. I did not offer a return policy on these, as they were priced at 185, and I only wanted to have to make one trip to the post office for these. The set was well packaged, and insured. The buyer contacted me today indicating that some scuffs have appeared on the outside of the box. He wants me to refund him the full purchase price, including my shipping costs, and he wants me to reimburse him for the return shipping. I have no way of determining whether or not he is even sending back the same set I shipped him. I'm not sure what to do?
Well he got a heck of a deal on it---so I don't think he has any right to be mean---and over that the box isn't what matters--its the coins. Speedy
Hey Zane. If you did not offer returns, then I think he got what he paid for. I kinda had the same thing happen. I sold three sets unopened ( exactely as they come from the mint). the guy says the package was all beat up and wants me to refund the $. He claims that I did a horrible job packing .As we all know, these 20th anniversary sets were just kinda thrown in the box. I offer returns minus 10% and all shipping charges. I also upgraded his shipping to priority which cost me double what he paid for. I told him that he needs to make a claim with the post office. i had full insurance on these items. He insists that I give him 100% of his money back. Not sure what to do either. He will probably keep them because he will be out at least $80 if not more.
If i did not have a return policy do not think I would deal with this person. scuff marks are a pretty lame excuse to send these back. It is like saying the boxes they come in are dented, which mine were. sound like someone may have cherry picked them to me. scuff marks? was this on the cardboard box or on the case. Sounds like a scammer to me
Zane: "he buyer contacted me today indicating that some scuffs have appeared on the outside of the box. He wants me to refund him the full purchase price, including my shipping costs, and he wants me to reimburse him for the return shipping." What! The scuffs have appeared on the box? How, by magic? Tell him to get real and contact the PO. If you put the box in another box, then tough, with proper wrapping it sholdn't have happened. As for return postage, tough. As for his attitude it stinks. If wrote this to me in such a nasty manner, then tough, but I'd explain about the postage situation (cost you double). -- oops that was Claw, never mind. But, this is a lesson, clearly state your return (or non-return) policy on Ebay.
"as is" you can't help that the PO plays basketball or soccer with the pkgs. once there out of your control John
Speedy and the other frank as well as the other fellas got it right. Kindly tell the guy to Poop in his fist. As long as you didnt try pulling a scam the you did nothing wrong.
Definitely sounds like he's trying the swap good for bad on you, tell him to file with the PO. As much as neg's bite, I don't think I'd give in in this case.
he got a great deal considering the aftermarket price. something doesn't seem right w/ the buyer. i wouldn't risk getting back scratched coins, ect....its a done deal and the guy got a bargain. you didn't scam him so that transaction is complete....
I agree with treashunt. Its tough luck on his part. If he is so picky about a few scuffs on a box, which is very petty, he should have purchased insurance, which would have covered any damage done by the PO. If there was no return policy set in place then......he cant return it. Let him buy a new box if it means that much to him. Like Speedy said, its not the box that matters, its the coins. I'd tell him to take a hike...or words to that effect.
The whole thing sounds like the buyer might have gotten a bad set from the mint and decided to "swap" it out in this manner for a better one instead of returning it. So my guess is that the set you get back will not be the set you mailed to him.
I bought 2 of your sets myself on Ebay (Ebay account is in my wife's name). The shipping was very prompt, the packing was excellent and the coins were as advertised. One of the airtites on one of the reverse proof had a small crack but that was done from the Mint not from your shipping. I did send off the 2 Reverse Proofs from those sets to NGC for grading. They looked very nice and I will be sure to let you know how they graded out. Sounds like that person is trying to pull a fast one on you. You probably already gave him/her positive feedback and now he/she will hold a negative feedback over your head if you don't send it back. That is one thing that really stinks about the Ebay feedback system.
Zane, perhaps I'm naive, but I tend to see the "good" in people as opposed to the "bad". If I were in your shoes, I would probably accept the return, but NO WAY, NO HOW would I pay the shipping fees. The shipping fees would be entirely up to him.
I would tell him: "I did not offer a return policy on these, but I am willing to refund your purchase price. There will be no refund of shipping charges. As a general rule NO dealer refunds postage costs, and many of them charge a restocking fee which I am not doing."
That could prove to be a costly mistake down the road. Any collectible will always be worth more if the original packaging/documentation is with the item(s). Just watch Antique Roadshow and you'll see what I mean. Like you I collect coins and not holders but the holders/packaging is not far away.
I agreed with Old Silver: How much room do the boxes take up? I pull the coins and store them, with a note about where the boxes are kept.
