The guys over at NGC are stoked about a coin they just graded recently. A Thrilling Experience in the Grading Room I can't even imagine how impressive this coin would look in hand!
Enough to probably buy a few islands off the Caribbeans I reckon. Wow. Is it an original or a restrike? Sorry not well versed with this type of coinage but still wow.
While I love that design I've always found it hard to get excited about such coins because when it comes down to it they are nothing but replicas. Mint issued replicas, but replicas all the same. And it just amazes me the money that people will pay for them. And yes that includes the 1804 dollars as well.
The 1801, 02, and 03 proofs aren't even mint issued replicas. There was no reason or authorization to produce them. They were made by Mint employees but for their own gain not the governments. The 1804 Class 1 on the other hand is a different matter, there was official authorization for that one. The Class 2 and Class 3 on the other hand were privately made with government equipment and supplies.
That is one neat coin. I agree it's not as cool as an 1801 proof dollar minted in 1801 but it's still a beautiful coin and one that I'd really like to own Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I agree in the fact I'd much rather have a specimen strike or a high grade ms of the period though either is just a pipe dream for me still it's a beautiful coin as to the early dollars which I collect I consider them 1794-1803 the 1804 is an out of period construction of the us mint (though I wouldn't say no if someone offered me one) but it doesn't deserve the title of king of coins there's far rarer and more important coins in my opinion
As far as ownership if it was mine I'd sell it get a nice ms 1801 made in 1801 and buy the 1794 I've always wanted
