So I pulled this out of a roll last night and at first it looked just like a worn nickel but then I looked closer and there seems to be something wrong with it. I'm not sure what's going on with it but it seems to have a die crack running around the rim on the obverse, possibly a cud on the reverse, maybe a weak strike or lamination error.....or......it's all just PMD. FYI - it weights in at 4.82 grams and is the same diameter as a normal nickel. Enjoy!
Ahh yes, I forgot about the dryer coin. Question-why what looks like a crack going all the way around the obverse? And would a dryer coin lose weight?
what looks like the crack area is probably because of the metal from the rim folded down on the coin. it would be possible for a dryer coin to lose some weight from being tumbled so much.
Cool. Good to know. After searching as many coins as I have I thought I would see more of these. This is the 1st nickel in $7,600 that has made me question what I was seeing.
I've seen quite a few posts on here regarding them so I figured they must be somewhat common. That's what I go trying to be smart again...I should have learned by now.
