Speaking of chocolate coins, lookie! You can design your own. That could be fun... http://www.foiledagainchocolate.com/
My birthday coins will be coming soon. I bought two sestertii from Frank Robinson's bargain sale. I asked for two denarii too but he had already sold them. I was like the young pup shark circling around his bargain sale. I feel like with in 40 minutes the majority were gone. I also have a couple bids out that I am hoping to win. CNG has some stunning Hadrian's that I am hoping to grab one. Also have a bid in the Frank Robinson auction but I don't have high hopes for that one. I bid modestly to get a feel for things and I think Frank is too well known for the quality of his auctions. I am a huge window shopper as well but I am trying to cut down because I will hit the bid/buy too quickly on somedays. I like your coin club pictures Eng. I have been thinking about joining the local one here I am just hoping to not be the only guy under 30 in the room.
There were quite a few coins I was hoping to get from Frank Robinson's bargain sale, but I was apparently too slow and only ended up with one lonely Constantius Gallus Fel Temp. Frank's coin descriptions on that bargain sale list were classic... to my mind worth as much as the coins themselves. I was chuckling as I was reading them in the middle of the night. I'm hoping I don't get to urge to buy another coin before the end of the year, because I just really shouldn't. But if a decent Antoninus Pius with the amorous Mars floating down to Rhea Silvia comes up, I may not be able to resist! And as far as window shopping for the impossible goes, I think I too would prefer a Boscoreale aureus to an EID MAR. Z.
Did Frank have pics with that bargain sale, because I looked for them and couldn't find any. Did I just completely miss the boat? I simply can't buy a coin with only a verbal description, even if it's Frank Robinson's.
Thanks for the tip TIF, i'll use that next year.. Whiz i highly recommend, i'm almost the youngest at 55...i think we have some guy's around 150 yrs old...
There were no pics. Most of the coins were below $10 or $15, and I think almost all of them were sold in the first hour. I've never bought a coin without having seen a picture first either, but most of them were bargain prices and the descriptions (even those that were hilarious) seemed to describe the condition of the coins in fair detail. Z.
AJ, that's a fantastic coin and that picture captures the tone wonderfully! Must be a real pleasure to own one of those. Z.
Oh... I guess any silver denarius of an emperor I do not have pre 250 AD. I have been moving the past 6 weeks, so I have not been able to find the time to add to my sets.
AJ-- that Boscoreale is fantastic, the fact that it was entombed in Pompeii ash for centuries makes it creepy-cool. I clearly remember learning about Pompeii in grade school. The horror and sorrow I felt left a mark.
As Doug said I think I prefer coins to "jump" at me rather than chasing them. Of course I would like to complete my Divi series set (two more to go) but chasing them might lead to a desperate buy when I come to meet them. And probably the quality isn't there or the price is ridiculously high in such a case My most recent purchase was absolutely unecxpected and an impulse buy (maybe twenty seconds before my best friend at the show decided he might like it in his trays, but too late, too bad...) Busy lil brother. Just busy. Also, still not able to get back into the market. Enjoying everyone else's buys though.
