Hey dawgs ... sadly, I have no cash this week, so I am merely window-shopping!! => but ummm => so, what is your next target? What are you guys sitting there, dreamin' about? => crisp, sweet RR's? ... Caligula? ... Athena? ... Franklin? ... yah, I'm just curious I love you guys!! Cheers, brothers/sisters (please share your current "wants")
Hey Steve i feel your pain..i bought 3 new coins, but can't remember what they are..i went to our coin club banquet last night no selling, lots of great food, and rewards and prizes, i think i'll post them here because there not ancient coins.. Our club was 50 yrs old last night, here's the first stack of gold coins..
Im waiting for some ancients to arrive from the netherlands & another from Philly. I window shop constantly, lol. But as for a next target, nothing really unless something real cheap comes along. I tend to slow my coin buying in Nov. & Dec. Main thing on my list is lucilla with a seated juno reverse and vitellius/otho but those two are next year.
Boeing's 50 year Anniversary, (1963 - 2013)..Banquet.. I'm the food chairman, i cook for 35 to 50 people once a month.. here's one of my awards..we mint metals every year 1 and half oz. Silver, bronze, copper, This coin was struck just for the 25 volunteers, satin finish, reeded edge..
When we arrive at the door for our banquet, you receive a number which at the bottom right you see i got 21 and my wife got 22. Nice little start to my evening...
I do better when I buy coins that present themselves rather than trying to chase down a specimen of a specific want. Sure I have some specific wants but chances are not good that I will find one when I go to the show tomorrow. Since the show is small, I should look at pretty nearly every ancient that attends with two favorite dealers and maybe have time to look over some of the overpriced and underquality offerings of a couple others. These last are sellers that buy at retail from better dealers and double the price in the hope of selling to someone. I buy from them mostly when there is a misidentification or something special enough that I'll pay double price. Tomorrow I will see the dealer with the Sikyon tet I almost bought last time. If he still has it and if he has nothing better I want more, maybe. How is that for a want list? I'll also see the seller that I know bought an 'old collection' which I know includes some nicer coins. If I have the choice, I'd always prefer coins that have been owned by collectors for the last 50 years over new hoard, freshly cleaned stuff. That means my want list includes a brightly scrubbed tet and nicely toned everything else. "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds." Emerson
Steve hope you don't mind that i jumped your thread..so i won't bore all of you to much, so i did get many other coins in prizes...But for cooking this year they gave me a gold coin..this is almost ancient.. Gold 1906-s Liberty $5 ..it pay's to join a club.......Thanks for looking..
There is an absolutely stunning Caligula that I've been chasing. It's the common Vesta reverse. But the portrait, detail, size and state of preservation make this the ancient equivalent of a "Monster" coin. I took a month or so off from buying coins, and I've been selling silver dollars so I have enough cash to pull the trigger. Still, my local ancient guy wants a pretty penny for it. But this is a "steppin' up my game" kind of coin. I've posted a link to a similar coin on ebay. I realize it's not the same coin, but it's in the league of this one, for about one third the price. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Roman-Coins...479?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item20d24c0777 I guess after talking about it here...I'd better just go ahead and buy it, so I can post it for you guys!
I've just crossed a major coin off of my lifelong wantlist (detail of which I will post soon, TIF ). As for the next target, I am aware of one coming to market May 2014, and I will likely be holding off purchasing other coins until then. The upcoming coin is #2 on my wantlist, with #1 being an EID MAR but the next EID MAR coming up is a fourree and I don't think I'm going to be able to convince myself that it is sufficient to fill the spot.
I dunno why anyone would spend over 1k on a copper coin with that appears to be active verdigris on it.
If we are dreaming the impossible dreams (and for me it is beyond impossible), the coin I would rather have than an EID MAR is figure #2: http://ansmagazine.com/Summer04/Boscoreale I love the jugate heads, historical link and reverse type. I would prefer this slightly worn Boscoreale to a mint state toneless example but might be talked into one with a nice clear Gonzaga countermark even if it were lighter in tone. I can be very reasonable when dealing with the impossible.
Active or not, compare the coin to about 20 of these of which one was over $1000: http://www.acsearch.info/search.html?search=similar:684660 To be $1000, asses of Caligula or Agrippa need to be better than fine with so-so surfaces.
Next target: one more coin to complete a themed collection I've been putting together. ('complete' being a relative term, will undoubtedly add to/upgrade various pieces over time). Looking forward to some mail deliveries in the next few weeks so that I can photograph the remaining coins and do a big reveal, complete with fancypants presentation You may roll your eyes at the set, or think 'whatever...' but it's been a ton of fun putting it together. Probably need to back off buying for a while-- might give some thought to a new mini collection theme. Flying pigs are always welcome though. I'd like to find an example of each region/mint's pigasus coins. I know of nine such regions which have a winged boar on their coins. So far I only have Klazomenai examples. None of them are cheap, by my standards, nor are they plentiful. It's going to be a very slow accumulation.
Wow, apparently there are a lot of us that are chompin' at the bit to score a new coin!! => a whole lotta great coin ideas, gang!! (Doug, I'm absolutely lovin' the elephant coin!!) Bing => you crack me up!!
Eng => I'm totally jealous of your coin-group and your zany fun-nights!! Up here in the north, we drink Crown Royal and throw pennies at the timber wolves ... *sigh* ... it's almost the same as your thingy
