[ancients] another flying pig

Got my gluteus kicked in the Gorney & Mosch auctions today and yesterday. Such grand plans... I spent so many hours studying the lots-- especially the 188 large mixed lots-- converting to USD, adding buyer's fees, estimating cost per coin at various price points, ranking my favorites, planning which ones were more important for bidding, yadda yadda yadda. Got up at 4 a.m. to bid on some. The large mixed lots hit the block during morning work hours today-- I had to juggle monitoring the action while working. I'm exhausted, and for almost nothing.

And in the end I only hit 'bid' a few times. By the time the large mixed lots were up most were already double the estimated price and many hammered at 3, 4, 10 times the estimate. I didn't get any of the large mixed lots I was after.

    [tail between legs]

I did get a few things though and was happy to add to my flock of flying pigs.

Forgive the heavily doctored photo-- this was a late addition to their auction and the picture was terrible-- low resolution and they'd cropped some of the edges (I 'restored' them in this photo). In a few weeks when I get the coin I'll do it justice with better photos.

It's another peewee coin but the details are great.

I'll take that coin as a consolation prize any day of the week. Sorry to hear about the auction- I know the feeling.

Firstly, I should probably say Hi to everyone reading since this is my first real post on this board since joining last week.

But TIF, I have to just jump in and say...

That Gorny & Mosch lot auction was BRUTAL! Ditto whatever you said about all the planning, and said planning going kaput. I had narrowed it down to a few of the smaller early-mid Roman Imperial silver/bronze lots, but once I saw how the Greek lots were going, I was practically wincing even before the opening bids for my lots came up on the screen.

The single lot I ended up winning came right up to my budget and was apparently so unloved it 'only' went for twice the estimate. And to be honest, even the visible coins in that lot weren't what you'd call pretty. I'll see if they were worth it when they eventually make their way to me here in Singapore.

Coincidentally, I did also get myself a pig (with bonus piglets) at the auction. It's a type I've been wanting for some time, but alas, mine doesn't fly :

a huge sow lying on the shore, under the oak trees,
that has farrowed a litter of thirty young, a white sow,

That place shall be your city, there’s true rest from your labours.

It was my first G & M auction and I really enjoyed watching all the beautiful coins come up on my screen, even if almost all were way above what I could stomach and afford.

Welcome zumbly. Glad you got something anyway. That's a great pig with her piglets. I'm sorry to report I didn't even look at any of the auctions as I'm still in the time out corner (and probably will be for the foreseeable future)

I'm glad to see that I am not the only one who prefers not posting coins until they are in hand. I have had coins 'go missing' after being posted and had coins that did arrive only for me to discover something significant (like it was fake). I have returned coins for problems not bad enough to start an all out war with the dealer but that I would feel better if I had not posted them without mentioning something (e.g. repatinated). These coins have been around for a couple thousand years and we hope AJ will be with us for a number more (maybe not 2000???) so we can respect his decision to wait until he has both the coin and a good photo to share.

My experience with 'name' sales has been that some lots go for the opening bid (or fail to sell) while others skyrocket beyond any reasonable level and I am often at a loss to explain the situation. Occasionally, we see a coin listed at an unreasonable start price and, occasionally, there is a coin that even the big houses will fail to recognize is worth a lot more than what they thought. Sometimes I suspect some of these relate to their catering to a big consignor who insists that a junker be listed as better than it is and they agree to get the business. Sometimes I suspect we are just seeing two pig headed bidders who both decided to buy the lot at whatever price necessary not caring that they are paying a couple thousand more than reasonable.

I bought two coins today but not from Gorny & Mosch so no one will mind waiting forever to see them.
