I don't know much about VAMs, but I decided to go though every single Peace 1923-P VAM listing on VAMworld until I found one that matches my Type coin. I doubt this carries any premium, but I was sort of like playing "Where's Waldo" so it was fun and wanted to share. What you think? my coin: http://www.vamworld.com/1923-P VAM-1AO VAM listing: 1923-P VAM-1AO 1AO II 1 · B2a (Die Gouge Right of E in LIBERTY) I-2 R-5 If I am correct, than this is an R-5 = Rare (Several Thousand examples). But only I-2 = Minor die variety with some interest to variety collectors. For you VAM experts out there, does an R5 bring a premium if this is not one of the Elite or Top 50 types? Here's a full shot of my coin:
I am not a VAM expert, but I can't see a minor variety like this bringing a premium. Generally the hot list, elite list ect, are dramatic varities. I think I heard once that these lists were made to discourage people from overhyping microvams". Often die stage matters greatly. For example a "scarface" with a hint of a diecrack is far less desirable than an example with a wide deep crack running all the way to the ear. Mice coin BTW, MS 65?
It's tough to get a nice premium for any I-2 VAM. I've found a number of R5s-R7s with a low interest factor and have only received an additional 10-15% bump relative to grade. In some cases, it wouldn't make any sense to get them graded and attributed unless it's a key date or Top 100/Hit List VAM.
