The end of the right wheat stalk has me concerned also but I'm still sending it in, I'll sleep better. It will be a good ride however it turns out, now if the lottery tickets win.......
There are so many of these fakes out there, and they look exactly like the OP's coin. The chances of finding one of these Chinese produced replicas in a roll is much higher than a genuine example. And in this grade, the chances of this coin being real is basically zero. I've heard of some 'less than honest' eBay sellers "salting" their "unsearched" rolls with these copies, readily available on Aliexpress or similar sites for $1.80 with free shipping.
hope it works out for you.since we are talking lottery what are the odds of finding a fake 09s vdb in a random roll of pennies.i have never found either real or fake in a roll and haven't won the lottery either.
Thank you, but I am well aware of the positions. While yours may be close to the position of #3, it does not look to be exact, and this is ignoring the fact that the mintmark itself doesn't look to be correct and the whole coin has a very questionable appearance. My eyes are not what they used to be, and this is especially true for iffy online photos, so I thought pointing out the clearest issue would be the best approach, and is why I suggested posting better photos. Please trust me in that I did not want to be the first to make this call. Before you submit, and if you do not want to post better photos, at least take some time to research known counterfeits. This link shows numerous photos and should be a decent start: http://www.flickr.com/photos/coinforgeryebay/sets/72157625361143308/
Hub doubling does not occur on the mintmark...a repunched mintmark (or RPM) does. And since all the 1909-S VDB dies have been accounted for, I don't think it's possible for a new one to show up with a doubled die or RPM. The coin does not look right to me, though I can't pinpoint it on anything specific. The mintmark is just so bold compared to the rest of it, the color looks off, the coin overall looks a little "mushy"...I dunno...
Put me in the coin is fake category. Bust style is wrong for a 1909 and the relief is too low and mushy. The bust on a 1909 is sharply detailed and the relief is relatively high. Date relief is low but the mintmark is bold. The fields don't meet the rims on a 1909 like they do on this coin. When you blow up the obv image the MM does not appear to be the correct style. There is a Chinese counterfeit that looks like this coin.
It was a nice feeling while it lasted but I'm in total agreement that it is a fake, it looks just like the one selling for 2 bucks at one of the sites posted here. Oh well, back to searching rolls plus it will fill the hole in my "b" collection. Thanks for all the input.
Even though some details are off I would still pay to send it in. The last thing you want is to die and have an estate auction then someone gets it and turns it in themselves to find out it was real all along. It's hard telling how it got into the roll. It could have been from someone who had it since the thirties hidden in an old coin bag not knowing anything about coins and deciding to roll their pennies because they need money due to not getting any social security benefits from the government shutdown.
