For the time being I'm gonna withold further comment, but I think I'm seeing something on this coin that apparently no one else is.

    Very nice coin....

Maybe I'm seeing things, but it looks like there is too much wear on the highest points. It could be lighting, but I especially don't like the wear on the talon. Because of the coloration, I'd be hard pressed for AU...however, XF-45 would be a bit low.

    I'd settle for AU-50...

Then again, I rarely get to grade capped bust coins....

This coin really has me puzzled. There's something that strikes me as "wrong" about it. At first I thought AT, then I thought a whizzing, then, after much constrination, I think the coin has been tooled on the obverse....Mike

    p.s. Is it an 0-102?

I don't see any tooling. Where do you see the work?

    In the hair.

Mike---I looked and looked but don't see any sign of tooling...at least it doesn't jump out at me...in what part of the hair do you see it?

I'm personally not seeing any major problems, but I definitely miss things. Hopefully in this case I am right about not seeing anything. Mike, I have not received my capped bust half book yet, so it is still unattributed by me, so I'm not sure about the overton number.

Please see the photo attached to the next post for details -- in short, the inner hair lines lines look like they are engraved and look different from the examples I found on Heritage.

Honestly, I'm not that sure about my conclusions and I don't follow the bust halves that closely, but something just doesn't sit right with this coin.

For the record, I truly hope I am wrong -- I have been so before and surely will be again -- and this is a wonderfully original bust half...Mike

Here's a picture of the areas where I saw tooling (in the hair) and the areas that led me to say whizzing (around the stars). The coin seems to be AU or at least high XF judging by the wear. However, the coin has no luster visible in the photos except in the very protected areas around the stars. This feature is what led me to say whizzing.

Again, this is only my sense judging from photographs. I'd really like to see the coin in-hand as both of these problems would be immeditately evident after only a few seconds looking at the coin through a loupe...Mike

OK - now what do ya see Bud ?

re: the tooling issue, I considered that a possibility myself, but I've made that mistake with these before. Sometimes the hair details just look that way so I gave it the benefit if the doubt. Mike could be right though. It's what I'm seeing that bothers me most.

So what exactly do you see ?? I'm wondering if I'm the one that's crazy, but that sure looks like ............. - and I don't mean a plug.

I see something that I think you are talking about but can't ID it---at first look it does look kindof like a plug but after looking closer it doesn't seem to be that...
