It was a great day to be a Jefferson collector.....I hope. 1953 P This is near the top of the list for rare full steps. I need this to be a 64 or higher, and that only matters if it's FS. *PCGS gives the FS designation to nickels with 5 steps or more.* PCGS Population: MS 64 FS - 7 MS 65 FS - 7 MS 66 FS - 2 MS 67 FS - 0 What do you think? 1947 S This one takes a big jump in value when it hits 66 and only in FS How do you think this guy would do? PCGS Population: MS 64 FS - 78 MS 65 FS - 198 MS 66 FS - 47 MS 67 FS - 1
Yeah, as far as FS, I'm gonna say no way on the '53 and probably not on the 47s. I do think the former is a 65-66, and the latter is a smooth and easy 66 though, and a gorgeous one at that!
No way the 53-P gets full steps, too many little nicks. The 47-S on the other hand has a good shot. It has a real shot at full steps if the photo is accurate. Without the toning, I think it is an MS65 all day, but the eye appeal of that coin might push it into MS66 territory. I think the key will be the luster, is it premium gem luster on both obverse & reverse?
Greg, That is very cool but at the risk of sounding like Doug, I am not going to judge luster from photos. I will however take your word that the luster is worthy of a premium gem grade. Are you gonna submit it? Paul
Yeah Paul, I am submitting 20 coins. I'm hoping half of them will be Jeffs if I can find the right candidates. These are some options.
Not a Jefferson collector, so I can't honestly say about the full steps--as regards high grade gem--definitely, and in terms of eye appeal, definitely. If they were going to NGC, both are star material. You know how I feel about the colors.
I was hoping you would give your opinion. I will send these in, including the 68 D. How about this one? Can I squeeze a 65 FS out of it?
This is quite possibly how ALL coin pictures / gifs should be done! I think people would get a much better idea at what a coin really looks like in-hand as the coin is moved around in the light. Very cool, dude.
The 38-D is nice but I am afraid that the carbon spotting on the reverse will prevent it from an MS67 grade and the 38-D is very common in high grade so I don't think an MS66 would be worth the grading fees. The 39-D would grade MS65 based on those photos. But if you are looking for coins to complete a submission, I think they would be good coins to gamble on.
Once again, not a Jeff collector, so I am not the authority on this series by any means. To me they look like MS 65-66 coins, with the eye appeal in the toning. The other two look more sharply struck, but that is just me--I really don't know the series.
I don't think your coins will receive the FS designation, but the 83-D seems to be pretty close (just my opinion, not being an expert though). Apparently it really depends on the grading service if a 'borderline FS' coin will get the designation or not. I have recently bought a couple of FS-Jeffersons, graded by different TPGs, you can be sure I'll compare them when they arrive ;-)
