So I have been wanting one of these for a bit. I don't think I own one but cannot be positive. Anyway, 43mm, 71 grams. To me it appears to be Ptolemaic Egypt, Ptolemy III. I chose it because of the smooth flan. Many of these can be porous. As our dealer friend Frank Robinson says, I can always put this in a sock and make a weapon Obama cannot take away.
Mine is small, 19mm, Svoronos 711. I wanted it to demonstrate the undertype on certain Proto-Nabataean overstrikes. So you see boys and girls, it's not the size, but what you do with it.
Lovely coins, sadly I dont own any version of them. I have been eyeing them a bit more the past few months but none have jumped at me. As with others...its on the list!
I didn't know you collected ancients, Green. I thought you just came around these parts to harass us.
LOL John. Actually, I must confess.......the coin belongs to my wife but she keeps it in my collection. And I do come here more often ever since SteveX signed on.
Of course, not just size counts.... Ptolemaic Kingdom, Ptolemee IV Head of Zeus right PTOLEMAIOY BASILEOS, eagle left, cornucopia in field 36.11 gr, 34 mm Ref : Sear #7841 Q
I am jealous of both yours and Dionysus', my poor guy at only 43mm cannot hold up against your 47mm monsters.
Here my lil guy Ptolemy III Euergetes. Æ Hemidrachm - Triobol. Alexandreia mint. First phase, struck circa 246-242/1. Diademed head of Zeus-Ammon right / Eagle standing left on thunderbolt, head right; cornucopia over shoulder; E between legs. Svoronos 974 var. (control mark). AE40 about 46.5 g.
"MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED! I bid on that coin!" lol! Oh well, i'm glad it went to a good home. it sure is a beauty! the color is just amazing. here's my ptolemy iii at 40 mm...
Lol, sorry man. I sure we all step on each others toes at times. I am surprised ancientnoob and I haven't battled it out more, since we collect similar areas.
Ummm, I may not have the biggest one, but I have two!! => both are philopators (roughly 40mm and 70 grams each)
