I've got what looks like tape damage and residue on the obverse of this 1897-P. Is there any way to safely get rid of the residue? It's not a high-value coin and I'm not planning on selling it so I don't mind if the cleaning impairs the value a bit.
Though what Rick said would more than likely work, wouldn't the toning on the coin where the tape has not been, be different than that of the coin under the tape? ~Mizo
I agree the toning will be different. I would use a good coin dip which will make the coin look like new.
I know there's going to be a big color difference, I just think it will look better without that nasty yellow residue on it. I'd rather not dip it and strip all the luster as the reverse looks great.
I would give it a few hours and follow up with a second or third bath if needed. It will only remove organic stuff on the coin. Now the warning part. The organic stuff hides small scratches and hair lines on the coin. The acetone will remove the tape but the coin may not look any better. Don't try to help the acetone with Q-tips or even touch the coin with anything.
I heard you can use olive oil for tape residue although I have never tried it and I don't know how long it needs to sit.
