I am oing to do this for the first time ever. what all do I need to know. which coins should I ask for? which coins should I look for in the rolls?
Pennies will give you the most finds. Save all wheats, and all pre 1983 pennies if you want the copper. And keep an eye out for errors or varieties. Nickels, save all pre 60's You will hardly find anything from Quarters, dimes, and halves.
dimes are fun to look for pre-1964 silver dimes. in a $100 in dimes i usually find 1 silver dime. sometimes you go thru 2-4 dry spells where you find nothing but do not get discoraged. keep searching. the thrill is in hunt. have fun.
dawg i says it once and i'll says it again, you need to start with Half Dollars. go big or go home as some would say. Dimes are chump change in my opinion I used to do um all the time till the silver starterd dryin up.
what is so great about pre 1960 nickels? it still a nickel. no silver. as for pennies what varieties and errors are there? I am starting with maybe 20-40 what all should I buy how many pennies half nickels dimes etc
Pennies have tons of errors and varieties. Go to lincolncentresource.com and check out all the different things you can find. If I had a budget of $40 I would get a box($25) of pennies and the remainder in nickels unless I could get some halves or CWR dimes.
alot of banks do not carry 50 cent pieces. if you order a box you have to get $500 all at once and there's usually a $5.00 charge for the box/service.
I ended up spending only 20$ I got 10$ in nickels and 10$ in pennies. I found a 1960 proof nickel,a 4$ face of copper pennies, and 5 wheat pennies. took hours to go through all of them.
I have been sorting pennies for about a year now and to me it seems the most rewarding. Halves are fun too.
I think I have sorted about 500$ worth so far this year. Would have done more but my fiancée is mad enough at my 25$ a week regiment. haha
if that's the case you may want to rethink marrying. she may force you to give up coin roll hunting and perhaps coin collecting.
a friend of mine actually broke up with his fiancee 2 weeks before the wedding because she was not going to have him collecting coins and she wanted him to use the money seling his collection to pay for the wedding. He wasn't giving it up and left her. I don't blame him do you?
same here when I was born my godfather got me a bunch of sets to start my collection. when I started going to school when I was 5 I would save haf of my lunch money to buy coins and bills. did that til I finished high school.
those are funny stories. my girlfriend Jenny actually likes searching for wheaties pennies/cents... see does cents and do dimes for silver. she is ok with my coin collecting. see is now into world paper money. fun and it does not cost her/us a fortune.
ok here goes...the story of when my girlfriend and I almost broke up about 2 years ago.....she was living with me at that time too. I said she had to move out and the day before that I had taken my whole coin collection for safe keeping at my parents house until she got all of her stuff out of my apartment. next day she said that she had noticed my coins were not in the usual spot lol. I told her flat out you just broke my heart and I was not about to let her take the next best thing in the world to me....my sanity I had with my coins. lol anyhow she had the nerve to ask me if I trusted her. I guess she got my answer lol. this story has a happy ending. lol she and I are still together and the coins are safe in my apartment.
