So I tried my hand at ebay selling...

I sold a 1971 s proof Ike for $9 shipped (which lost me money). I sent it to the buyer, and he didn't want it. Instead of asking for a return, he immediately opened a case with ebay, saying I cracked it out of the original government plastic, whizzed it, then resealed it. This coin had obvious original toning/hazing, so this was a ridiculous claim.

I accepted his return (clicking the 'buyer's preference' option for resolving the case), then he negged me saying it wasn't worth return shipping.

Is this what it's like selling stuff on ebay these days?

Not generally but anything is possible. I generally get over my asking price when selling on ebay. I do lots of research on what to sell and make sure I have a good listing.

very unusual,i have been selling for 12 years ,12,000 all positive feedbacks.you will find that you make good friends and have much fun selling on ebay, but not likely to make much profit, but keep at it and enjoy .far more nice people than bad.

That's good to hear. I've sold 3 things lately, so having one of them come back negative is kind of a big hit, percentage-wise.

My buddy sold a PCGS MS69 Silver Eagle once and the buyer negged him saying it was "not white, but had toning". Point being, there's no way to satisfy some people. So sorry this happened to you.

Did he, in his infinite wisdom, happen to say why you would do such a thing?

Can you provide a link to your auction listing so that we can see how you presented the coin?

Personally, I think that negging someone over a $9 purchase is really scummy. I recently sold an uncirculated raw Mercury Dime that had album slide marks which I disclosed in the item description. The buyer negged me over a month later after PCGS body bagged the coin for damage. That is my only negative on E-Bay.

Of course not. I didn't even bother to ask. I figured I would just immediately issue a refund to protect my feedback.

    Yeah, it's right here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/171135210238?ssPageName=STRK:MESOX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1561.l2649

Your listing looked great to me. I blocked that fool. Sorry he was a jerk. Who in their right mind would complain about a nicely pictured coin for $9, that's 40% silver, with original packaging???

Sounds like he was just trying to get a free coin, at your expense.

Thanks. Yeah I blocked him too. I was actually looking forward to him returning it because I think I could get a little more if I tried to sell it again.

Interesting? That is the only negative the buyer has left in the last 2 years and he left 600 + of them.

That's what I thought was weird too. He's got a ton of feedback, but thinks that the ike was whizzed? I just don't understand it.

Caught him on a bad day perhaps. Like the graders at PCGS.

this has been happening alot lately ....

buyers opening up false claims and leaving negative feedback

ask all the questions up front and cover your back ....

My point was only that he accused you of doing something that there is no way he could possibly prove, which IMO reeks of an excuse (as opposed to an honest complaint). All things considered, I agree that negging someone over a $9 buy is a very scummy thing to do.

There is a new "Report a Buyer" option available. Don't know how new this actually is, or how effective as I've never used it. I found it on my own eBay feedback profile page, so it's probably on every seller's feedback page. From here you can file a complaint regarding: buyer making unreasonable demands, buyer abusing a buyer protection program, buyer misusing returns, and other related issues.

As for the actual item discussed here, I'm at a loss why the buyer left a negative. Must have had a really bad day.

This is just silly what this buyer did and I've blocked him from bidding on my listings. Folks do not really need this silliness!

It is impossible to whizz a Proof coin without obvious evidence and while these OGP slabs can be opened, 99 out of 100 times, the slab is damaged during the process. Regluing them is possible but quite frankly, the amount of effort expended for a $10 coin just isn't worth it to even the dumbest of scammers!

Your photo's show absolutely nothing wrong with the coin in the listing and I expect that your buyer has gotten caught up in all the counterfeit/alteration threads floating around on the Internet. Unfortunately he, s/he has no clue as to what constitutes "whizzing".

Either that or, as suggested, he was looking for a freebie! I have zero tolerance for either scenario.
