Id say its like a high XF details....maybe What do u guys think...I'm wondering what other opinions will be
I'm not sure if this cleaning highlights the wear, such as on Liberty's cheek, but in my opinion it is in the lower AU range.
lol...ya know I 1st wrote low AU and the edited it to xf when I took a second look ath the cheek are too and thought the same about the cleaning....cool
Thanks guys! Lower Au is what I was figuring too. What kind of value would you give this coin in its current condition and with it being cleaned?
What specifically is it that makes you think that coin has been harshly cleaned ? I ask because in looking at it even in the full size blown up images I can't see that it has been harshly cleaned. For example, take a look at this one - http://coins.ha.com/c/lot-image.zx?saleNo=131250&lotNo=28875&lotIdNo=11110&inventoryNo=0&id=9184320 - see the difference ? Now look at this one and compare it to yours - http://coins.ha.com/c/lot-image.zx?saleNo=1151&lotNo=11121&lotIdNo=92072&inventoryNo=0&id=6180551
I do see the difference thanks. Under a 10X loop you can see where it has been cleaned lightly at some point....There is also cloudiness around the stars and no original luster left on coin.
Your full size image is even bigger than a 10x loupe would show it. Yes, your coin has some hairlines on it, but not the kind of hairlines that a coin gets from a harsh cleaning. Your coin has the kind of hairlines that almost all circulated coins have. As for the lack of luster, circulation wear would remove most of it and the heavy toning on your coin would cover up (hide) any luster that might remain. I really don't think it's been harshly cleaned at all.
From the pictures, it looks as if has some green [PVC] on the high points. The cleaning is not that noticeable, if it is. The green [PVC] can be removed, so as not to continue to build up, and do serious damage to the surface.
Thanks so much for your input. In your opinion what grade would you give this coin...and any ideas on approximate value? Thanks again for you help.
I don't think that's PVC residue Searcher, I do believe that is light verdigris you see on the high points. Look closer at the tip of the tail feathers - think you'll see what I mean.
Personally I think the coin is XF45. But I'm pretty strict with grading, a TPG might agree or say AU50. As for value I'd guess it should be somewhere around $375. Assuming I am right of course about it not having been harshly cleaned.
GDJMSP, You could be right. I cannot think of any test, that would prove otherwise, myself. I agree with the grade, and value also. Do we know how the coin was stored? That would give us more understanding of the conditions. Any coin that has copper in it's composition, will have these effects, if conditions are right.
Thanks!! What would you value it at if it was cleaned? Although, I don't usually collect US coins..this coin just has a strange dull but polished look to me. I will try to post another picture to show you what I'm talking about. It almost appears as if the coin maybe has been cleaned "lightly" & dipped. The dipping would explain the hazing around the stars on the obverse. It was stored in a 2x2 cardboard flip in a coin binder sheet called lead dog products. Thanks for the help guys!
