this coin probably got stuck in one of the machines that counts the coins , regardless of what happened to the coin it is just a damaged coin and not a mint error. even if a coin is damaged at the mint after being struck it is not a error coin. these gouges hurts the value and the looks this coin instead of making it better.

Hi DesertGem - the cello packaging is white. I have the original packaging of the 2002 united states mint uncirculated coin set, it comes with a certificate of authenticity philadelphia mint - it's the common mint set of 5 state quarters in cello packaging. Then another set of a Franklin dime, a penny, a nickle, a Kennedy Half Dollar and a Sacagawea Dollar.
Thanks again for all your help!

This is not the first coin in mint packaging to be found damaged, nor will it be the last.

Then it must be the real thing, but with a damaged coin in wrap. Thanks for looking.

    Dear all,

Thank you for all your expert advice. I believe based on your analysis that this is a damaged coin and nothing more. Thanks again for your time in reviewing the photos.

    Best to you!

This has simple all over it. The coins rim has scratches that had to be added Post Mint. Since the rims don't fully strike up until the point that the coin is struck, scratches on the rim had to occur after the strike, hence, post mint.

Damaged coins do get into Mint sets as do coins with machine doubling.

That Franklin might be worth having attributed :)
