I am spending some time this weekend sifting through the coin collection that I inherited. I am looking at the foreign coins now, and there are quite a lot of Mexico coins. I am looking them up to try to determine the value, and since most of them are not very old (1980's to current), the ones that I have found so far seem to be worth face value. If I were to decide to sell these, where would I go to sell them? I am new to coins all around so any advice would be appreciated. I am not really sure why these are in the collection since they are not old. Also, I am confused on the face value because I read that coins prior to a certain time are not legal tender anymore in Mexico? Can anyone clarify?

Im not quite sure if old coins can be used there or not, I have never heard they cant. As for selling mexican coins from the 80's. I think it depends on where you live, here in Tx, mexican coins are quite common. I have a stash my self given to me by friends for free. As far as im aware unless you have something rare or obscure most from such a recent date are just face value and are something different to have for the collection.

  4. I think the 10, 20 and 50 Nuevos Pesos have something like 92.5% silver content from '92 - '96 If I'm not mistaken.

bagerb, in 1992 the peso was replaced with a "new peso" worth 1000 of the old, and there was a general redesign of the coins and notes. The two currencies coexisted for a few years and then the old coins were demonetized.

As an example, if the common 1000 peso coin from the late 80s were still legal tender, it would be worth one peso in today's Mexican currency, or about 8 cents US. When you see this coin listed in catalogs at several dollars in UNC, that reflects its value purely as a collectible.

Thanks for that clarification! I was having a hard time grasping what I was reading when researching but I understand better now with the way you explained it. So doesn't look like my Mexico coins are worth much at all in that case. I also have a few Canadian coins, as well as some from a few other countries that I am about to start looking into so maybe I will stumble across some nice ones there.
