I've been trying to buy coins with winged boars and finally got my first one. Yeah, it's tiny. Yeah, it's porous. Yeah, it cost $30,944.20* But it's a start for my Pigasus collection! *calculated by the pound ;-) IONIA, Klazomenai. Circa 499-494 BC. AR Diobol (9mm, 1.18 g). Forepart of winged boar left / Incuse square. Cf. BMC 9-10 (drachm); cf. Traité I 488 (drachm). VF, toned, porous. Very rare with boar left, apparently unpublished as a diobol. From the Daniel Koppersmith Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Group Electronic Auction 256 (25 May 2011), lot 123. Ionia is modern-day western Turkey, on the Aegean sea. Klazomenai (alt. Clazomenae) apparently had large boars and there are myths about a winged boar/sow. From http://www.theoi.com/Ther/HusKlazomenaios.html THE HUS KLAZOMENAIOS was a gigantic winged sow which terrorized the Greek town of Klazomenai in Ionia, Asia Minor. Aelian, On Animals 12. 38 (trans. Scholfield) (Greek natural history C2nd A.D.) : "I have heard that on Klazomenai [and island west of Smyrna] there was a Sow with wings, and it ravaged the territory of Klazomenai. And Artemon records this in his Annals of Klazomenai. That is why there is a spot named and celebrated as `The Place of the Winged Sow,’ and it is famous. But if anyone regards this as myth, let him do so."
a pigasus coin....very nice! looks like she has some poor fellows limb dangling from the side of her mouth and an awesome mowhawk.
How about when pigs sleep? Another shot from the farm fair yesterday. It's Wilbur! Anyway, nice itsy-bitsy-teenie-weenie pigasi. I'm sure you could get a discount if you ordered them by the pound. And as far as the Aelian quote, yeah: probably a myth, but with genetic engineering and all, it may not be long...
How 'bout When Pig Swim? In my undergrad town there was a tourist trap featuring Ralph the Swimming Pig.
I know a lot of people are big into pigs, especially women. I should consider myself lucky then, haha! But I don't see the attraction. I mean I like pigs OK - with some barbecue sauce and a side of mashed potatoes....
Gorgeous Incuse Piggy, my awesome coin-sister!! ... man, you are definitely buying-up some fantastic animal-coins!! (congrats)
Spam cookoff, SpamOlympics (Spam Disc Shoot, Spam Can Relay, Spam calling, Spamburger eating contest). Austin is a fun place
Ah, the winged pig, a majestic animal, rarely seen in the wild. For the record, pork fat does rule, everything is better with bacon, and a small coin can still be Phat.
