I thought the portrait looked sort of goofy, and the other coins he has look bad.

The coin looks fake to me. The liberty head looks goofy and the letters in "Liberty" on the headdress look elongated. The rims look odd, and it looks "proof-like" in appearance. Per the Redbook, proofs are rare, and worth $165,000 or so, so I doubt a seller with 4 feedbacks has one.

I'm sure our other users will chime in with additional info.

Look at the reverse on the $5 Indian this guy is selling:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3360&item=3928544771

I doubt if the coin is even gold. Looks like the gold plating has worn off. Some poor sap has bid 56 pounds on the thing. Yikes!!

Hey Susanlynn9, if we get consensus that these are fakes, who should we report this guy to at Ebay per the ANA/Ebay policies??

Yes, the coin is a fake.
As a matter of fact, it's not even gold.
I feel like I must warn you though, if you try to contact the bidders, you risk being suspended from eBay. This would be considered "auction interference".

For whatever good it will do (and even though I do it frequently, I am not fully convinced that it's worth the effort  ), go to http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/selling-coins.html, and scroll down to the bottom of the page, then click on the "Report listing violations or problems with another eBay member in the Coins category." link and it will take you to the form. Be sure you are signed in to eBay before you go there.

[No action yet on a report I made of a seller offering a coin dated Meiji 48 (claimed to be 1915), even though the Emperor died in Meiji 45 (1912) and 1915 was Taisho 3! :( :( ]

he words the auction very subtle saying he is not a collector or grader of coins but then thats real funny because his feedback of 4 items bought is for coins

it would make you laugh if it didint make you cry.

i reckon this fellow has another account he uses and is doing a quick scam till hes caught

im getting realy realy sick of these scam merchants on ebay

Some sellers do that all the time. They sell hundreds of coins, usually fake Trade dollars or some such, and say "I know nothing about coins so all sales are final." Yet they have some bottomless pit, some apparently renewable source, of one fake 1877-S trade dollar or 1871 Seated dollar after another.

Aside from the coin being fake, I'm more concerned with "all bids and sales are final. No returns, refund, or exchanges. No guarentees." section that he put in super tiny font so that you need a magnifying glass to find it. If he's that adamant about not accepting returns, it makes me think he's running a scam. The 4 feedback that he has could be from friends of his for auctions that weren't even real. A lot of scammers do that.

Has anyone looked at the other auctions that this seller is running right now? You should see the $5 Gold Indian. I know I've never seen one struck that sharp. I also can't figure out why he's accepting the money in the US, shipping from the US, but does not have the auction listed in USD. Does that make sense to anyone here?

i went and told them, the more ya harras them maybe they will do something about it in the end like hire a coin collector to go around pulling auctions.Thet say the do but thats just lies a guy searching a regular 8 hours a day could near cover every coin even 2 guys or 3 could cover everything.((or woman)sorry ladies)).

surely they make enough to justify these wages from the coin section alone

I believe the seller is acting as an agent for the person in the UK who has the material.

This is pretty common. Lots of folks let experienced eBay sellers sell their stuff for them, rather than do it themselves.

Yes, all the "gold coins" he had up were fakes.
Did you see how much that worthless piece of brass sold for?

Of course eBay will take their cut of the profits, and claim benign ignorance.

Being a Trading Assistant myself, I understand selling for someone else. I didn't think that someone here would have someone overseas sell for them. I know that some of the other sites (UK, Australia, etc) have more free listing days and it is possible to list on those sites while living in a different country. When I thought about it, I thought that might have been what he did. Incidentally, I'm waiting for a call from eBay regarding the Coin Community Watch sometime this week. I already had the initial interview last week. I hope it comes to fruition so maybe then we will be able to make some changes for the better :)

I really hope it works out for all of us - maybe if I'm "one of their own" they'll listen and we all might be able to get some things changed. Obviously, I'm very naive - I still think there's hope
