Hay Im new to the forum, but hopeing the community can help me. I bought a 1987 Ase nothing special but it was a spot buy, received it today all seemd fine then i realised, there was a thickening of the rim. I can only describe it as a upstand on the rims edge.. I first thought fake cast coin? Weights 31.7-31.8g rings like silver, non magnetic. Some pics I hope will help explain. Umm my pics seem to be upside down for some reason :/
That is what is called finning. Some of the silver has squeezed up between the collar and the neck of the die. This can occur if the coining pressure is excessive, or if the die is not centered and is slightly off to one side (mis-aligned die) which increase the distance between the neck of the die and the collar making it easier for the metal to squeeze up there with lower pressure.
