Does anyone have any info regarding these? How to determine one is a machin's mill imitation halfpenny vs an actual halfpenny? I have my eyes on one on ebay but am looking for more info. Thanks, Simon
For starters, look carefully at each of these coins on CoinFacts. Very high resolution pictures, great for learning. There are probably some websites devoted to colonial coppers too.
Here is the link. It looks pretty good IMO. I read that one of the main features of the machin's mills is triangular denticles present on the coin, which you can see in the photos. http://www.ebay.com/itm/121166507088?ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1426.l2649
One diagnostic is supposed to be the cross on the shield on the reverse, on a Machins the cross is solid, on a British counterfeit they are sometimes outlined. There are many details to look at, the shape of the head, the lettering, take a good look at the different varieties of Machins and compare. It is an interesting field of study.
Yeah, I find early american coins to be quite interesting, ESPECIALLY if there is a cool story behind it like Machin's mills cents...
One great source is Q David Bowers book titled Whitman Encyclopedia of Colonial and Early American Coins. I lived not far from Machin's Mill in Newburgh,NY and gathered some material from the Local Historical Society on the Mill. I have a Machin's halfpence (1787) in my collection.
Hey thanks, that's a great site! I have a nice colonial I will be posting in a day or two if you are interested in seeing pictures of it. (1783 NOVA CONSTELLATIO).
Thanks. Sure, please post, I'd love to see. If you're interested in learning how to attribute Nova Constellatios, this link provides a guide.
Thanks for the excellent link. I think I have attributed the coin properly...I posted it here. http://www.cointalk.com/threads/i-think-i-attributed-this-colonial-correctly.236576/
