Not sure how many of you used this site, but I found it extremely useful in some cases. It was a huge archive of pretty much all banknotes in the world, sorted by countries and years. The website at http://aes.iupui.edu/rwise/ is down and banknoteworld.com seemed to be same thing, just on different domain. Currently the website says: Ron's WPM Web Site a.k.a. Banknoteworld is no longer available. My Director requested that it be removed from the AES server and there is no place else I can house the site, since it requires around 7 gigabytes of space. It was a good run and I want to thank all who contributed to the site and all who may have just visited to browse or increase their knowledge. Ron Wise It seems they have got into hosting traffic or space issue and it has been taken offline. 7 GB of photos is not even an issue, I can host it right away, but I`m not sure how to contact Mr. Ron, I didn't even know who runs it until now. Not sure what can be done to bring this resource back online, but I would be glad to contact Ron Wise if anyone got his email. As I mentioned, Id like to help bringing it online, if anyone got any ideas.
IBNS is aware of the problem and it is being worked on through those channels. It is hoped that it will be back up soon with a different host. Ron Wise's site was the official gallery sponsored by IBNS.
That's great, good to know. Not very good sponsors if it has been allowed to be taken offline with the kind of message you can see instead of the website. Hope it`ll be back soon.
Your criticism of IBNS as the sponsor is unwarranted. IBNS did not get any advance warning and was first made aware by a member trying to access the site.
I'm not sure it's appropriate to post someone else's email address in perpetuity on a forum.... ...unless he gave you permission? Dave
I should have updated the post, I found the email quite quickly, its right there on main websites "Staff" page. The website is down for relatively long time now, and I got the feeling it won't be back any time soon. Hosting issue with today hosting prices can be solved in days if not hours, at least that's how I work when sites under my responsibility go down. I find my criticism quite justified.
IBNS adopted the site as its official site with Ron's permission. Ron had control of the site and the images that were displayed on the site. IBNS has no proprietary interest in the site nor control over it until Ron releases the images to them if he chooses to do so. It is not a simple IT issue that can be solved by a techie who has no understanding of the legal and admiinistrative issues behind the problem.
And I'm sure that's one of the huge hurdles... I, for example, gave Ron and nobody else, permission to use the images I sent him, for his site only. Others may have done the same, or slightly different agreements with him over the years. Dave
Thanks for the good news! Fortunately I don't even have to change my bookmark, as the old "banknoteworld.com" works for that site too ... Christian
I, as the past image contents contributor to BanknoteWorld (Ron Wise the owner, not sure who owns it today) had a little surprise today when upon a visit to Banknoteworld.com I realised there's now a password (restricted) access to Banknoteworld.com. Haven't been notified about that in advance. When I accessed Banknoteworld.com immediately a username/password window popped up. Since I don't have one, and there's no info how to get one, I was unsuccessfully trying to close my browser to no avail, - the banknoteworld.com login box would pop up preventing me not only from closing the current browser tab it was on, but also preventing me from using or even shutting/reloading my browser down. I had to reboot my computer in order to gain access to my work again. Gladly the banknoteworld was gone and did not pop up again. I don't think I will be further contributing to the website, which puts barriers between the public and the images that they got from contributors for free unrestricted use. What's next? Will there be a fee? Latest images I contributed were not even posted on the website even if they seemed unique and hard to find. Perhaps those records were lost when (whatever happened to Ron Wise) the site went down before its redesign. I'd like to ask the (new) owner of Banknoteworld.com to remove my contributions from your website unless you're going to provide the contributors and everyone else a free unrestricted access to our donated contents. I would also like to raise the question whether Banknoteworld.com is still an official IBNS Gallery and if so, I'd like The IBNS to address this issue of restricted access to all public as well as to the members of IBNS. By coming to Banknotes.com you may find some interesting images and descriptions that are being worked on so it is not perfect. Although my website does not provide universal coverage for all international banknotes, I'm working to add more banknotes every year. My site is a commercial dealer store and a free image gallery, which is to remain free, without any restricted access. Regards, A. Tomonis IBNS LM-189
Audrius - his site was taken down by his employer and it is not sanctioned by the IBNS but had a lot of contributors including myself from the IBNS. I stopped contributing images a long time ago, maybe ca. 2000 or so as I then had my own website.
The site is still up. There seems to be a server issue. Perhaps the read/write permissions (chmod) were changed on media content like images. That's why it's prompting for a password with each image that loads. If you click cancel enough times, the entire page will load. I was able to navigate around to a couple of pages this way. Annoying to say the least. One way to get away from that login screen is to use the back arrow in your browser. This works in Chrome.
I see, thanks. Canceling-around I browsed a few pages. Haven't been there for a while. The images do not seem to load in this version. I wanted to look up a couple banknotes. I also noticed that "Donated by ------" links to the contributors' websites have been removed or they are not showing up in this restricted version.
