Biju, you will have to let us know when the Indian commemorative coin programme for the 2010 British Commonwealth Games is coming up.The 2010 British Commonwealth Games are being held in New Delhi. The Cricket World Cup is coming up.I don't know if there will be any commemorative coins issued for that, just like there was for the 1999 Cricket World Cup - the 5 & 1,000 Rupees from Sri Lanka. Aidan.
Aidan, till now, there is anouncements.. I dont think there will be any coins issued to commemorate the Cricket World cup. But for the Commonwealth Games, there is a chance.. The only sporting event for which the Indian Government issued coins was in 1982 Asian Games held in New Delhi.
Biju,I have got the 1982 Asian Games commemorative 10 & 25 Paise coins. It seems very strange that cricket hasn't yet been commemorated on an Indian coin,as cricket is almost like a religion. When you mention Sachin Tendulkar,Harbhijan Singh or Mohammed Azharuddin, then an Indian cricket fan's eyes will really lighten up. Aidan.
Thats right Aidan.. and you forgot about Dhoni.. In India, more people know about Tendulkar than the Prime Minister or President.. But the Government didn't even commemorate the 1983 World Cup victory of India. Its a mystery to me also..
Of course,I have heard of Kapil Dev & Sunil Gaveskar.I haven't heard of Dhoni.Kapil Dev was playing in the same period as Imran Khan was captaining the Pakistani cricket side. I'll start a cricket section in another area of the board. Aidan.
This past late summer I was in Antigua..the stadium that was being built for the Cricket Games is going to be huge!! I drove right up to the construction site.. RickieB
LOL, when I saw your topic I thought you were talking about ancinet Indian athletic competition on (obviously) the world FIRST coins!!! Ben
