So now I have 4 (and soon 5) Maundy coins. All are raw. Thing is, these are all different dates, and most are different Kings/ Queens. So once I get the 5th, I plan on selling them, and getting a Maundy set. Thing is, I'm not sure if I should buy the set in the raw, and send them in, or buy a set already slabbed? If I sent in raw, I would want each coin photographed, and that is $10/ea, so your talking $35 per grade, times four. So there is a spread of at least $100 per a raw, and a graded set. With that in mind, I wonder if I should buy one already graded, since I could probably pick up a graded set for less than $100 for being graded. Opinions please.
First and foremost, why have you bought five of these coins if you're just going to sell them, and if you do sell them, are you going to break even, profit, or suffer a likely loss? You're repeatedly bought coins, and when the novelty wore off, have sold them for a loss. I would like to think that throwing away money is not fun for you, so please tell me that this is somehow different from your past actions. Now, as for buying this set, your best bet is to buy slabbed if you want slabbed coins, but unless you are actually going to keep this set, I suggest waiting a few days or weeks because there surely will be a new coin you just have to have, and in order to buy it, you will almost certainly say you need to sell today's gotta have it coins. Break the cycle, Tim.
Books, we just sound like a skipping record to Tim... It is a never ending litany and after awhile he seemingly drowns all our advice out and goes off on a new tangent.
I recommend buying a raw Maundy set. But you must buy it as a SET, with identical toning patterns. Even better if it's in the original box. And for the love of god, buy them from a good dealer, or at least see them in hand first.
Yeah what happened to not buying coins any more and saving to repair your car and then to move and go to college? By the way how are things going with your girlfriend?
Good. I'm not spending much more to do this. I want to end the year on a good note. The money used from the sale of the maundy coins + a few others will be used to buy the set.
You stated in another thread that your monthly expenses are $250, and you think $140 to spend on grading fees ($25+$10, per your own words above, times four coins) isn't a big deal? That's essentially 60% of your monthly living budget (again, according to you). When you add in shipping, insurance and return shipping, the number floats much closer to $170. An 1883 Maundy set is $400 raw or $550 (OBO) for an MS NGC set currently on eBay. I don't see how you would be saving any money by buying raw then submitting the coins. Also, there's this: http://www.cointalk.com/threads/im-starting-to-get-worried.236206/page-2#post-1786491 You did say you "quite buying coins" (sic), and that was last Friday. It might be easier for people to sympathize/empathize with you if you didn't constantly deal in absolutes and pretend as though they were never said.
Be careful guys - he stops buying coins on a frequent basis, but our collective memory tells otherwise. Then when you call him on it he starts whining to the mods about cyberbullying and cybertalking because what he writes comes back like
Even if I wanted to, there is no arguing this as fact. However, and despite the incessant nonsense, I still hope that one day he will show more than a sporadic and fleeting level of maturity. Of course, and please correct me if wrong, but I believe his self-imposed low value cutoff was $30? Either way, and even if he is defining quality by price, his continuing to buy coins that he is likely burying himself on, and has no long-term interest in owning, is really no different from what he has always done. I still want to hear more about the new services he personally offers, and how he is going to be able to do for others what he cannot seem to do for himself.
I detect a grand scheme going on...... Get yourself set up in a basement at a young age. Train your parental units to give in to everything you want. Reinforce that you are smarter than everyone else that walked the earth to those parental units. Get a girlfriend that does not have the capability to tell you no and who lives miles and miles away. Get online to numerous forums. Get banned by a lot, but keep on plugging. Find one that allows you to stay and if you find yourself at times not getting where you want in convincing everyone else on the forum that you are smarter than all the others before you, whine about cyberbullying. Make sure everyone treats you with the due deference you deserve as someone who can propel the world society 1000 years into the future. Buy coins and find a few jobs that supplement your coin buying. Save nothing for the future. Change your coin focus every week or so. Buy coins and say what a great deal they are. Then when you get them write a post to say how awful the seller was and how everyone needs to know that this kind of stuff is out there..... I'd say ad nauseum, but that might indicate I have a low opinion of it. Actually, I am mostly amused by it. After a couple years, I have given in to the sheer entertainment value in this. And I don't have to pay my internet provider anything else to get this. By all means, continue (like it would stop anyways)... BTW buy them slabbed
I have not changed my "coin focus" that much. I collected various types of US coins, but as I got older, I found world coins to be a better value. US coins are overpriced, IMO due to collector demand. Be-it that I'm operating on a small budget for coins, I've been able to collect nicer coins for a lot less money. I don't care about demand. I collect stuff that looks nice, is old, and costs less.
Tim.... Siggy has a really nice set and he is a consumate dealer from what I understand. I haven't bought from him, but from seeing his posts here and his coins so far, I certainly would say he is one of the better ones you could deal with. Go to your parental units and grandparents, siblings, etc and tell them you need some cash ahead of the holidays... that this will make you the happiest 21year old in the world. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Great-Brita...4675990?pt=US_World_Coins&hash=item43bf713416 And then Don't Complain about it. (and you might have to wait for delivery....he is not in the US). (My apologies to Siggy ahead of time if he actually goes thru with it and follows his m.o. on ordered coins)
Here is an 1901 set that sold for less than $150. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Great-Brita...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
Nice set, but IMO, over priced. Here are the list prices for 1878 Maundy in Krause. Four pence, $100 Three pence $145 Two Pence, $60 Pence, $60. Not sure what the box ads, but $360 is the total from Krause. IMO, it's about a $300 set. The 1901 set I pointed out has a Krause total of $225, and only sold for $150 in auction.
That may be true, but that one has MUCH nice toning. I've seen some vividly toned Maundy Sets, I don't want a plainly toned one.
