    I just had a couple of questions. I have an 1824/1 half dollar that has toning or something on the reverse. My local dealer wasn't sure what might cause the discoloration. Any of you guys know what could be the cause. Also, on my 1822 there is some dark banding on both the obverse and reverse. I've actually seen this on others at local shops. Could it be sharpie or possibly where a rubberband was around it? Any thoughts would be appreciated. image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg

    It looks like the remnants (stain) of a broken rubber band on the coin.

    1) Take coin out of holder before taking pictures;

    2) see #1

    I will try and take them out to get pictures when I get a chance. I just hate opening airtites. My finger is just healing up from my last attempt. From looking at other coins and from the suggestion here, I'm pretty sure the marks on the 1822 are from rubberbands. The spot on the 1824 seems like it could be toning from a thumb print. It has been in a box, untouched for at least 30 years if not more.
