Reputable TPGS... Canada 1 cent 1896 The photos are as good as they're going to get, there is no rim damage, just the light reflecting off the plastic. Also, the two long scratches and pieces of lint are on the plastic, not on the coin.
This is a pretty conservative grading service, but, it doesn't mean they are right with their grade. I'll give it a bit more time before revealing their opinion. Maybe someone else wants to chime in? When I first saw the grade, the photos, the price, I was certain it was incorrectly graded. Taking photos through two layers of plastic with air bubbles in between is a real pain. That is the problem with this type of grading package. Here is the flip side...
ICCS flip... I'd like to change to XF-40 to XF-45, as I thought it was in an NGC slab (where I would expect looser grading)
I graded this vf30, because it looked like it had rim damage, but after reading it was the light in the pic. i would have changed it to xf40, it still has most of the ware on the bust which matters the most..JMHO..
Well, what can I say, I picked it up for $6, shipping included ($4 + $2 shipping). The grade makes me wonder, why? I see almost no flaws with the coin, except for the wear on the effigy. The discolorations or shade variations on the coin photos above are the cause of the two layers of plastic and air pockets between them. The rest of the flaws in the photos (2 scratches and missing rim/edge), I've explained in an earlier post. There are no comments attached to the grading, that would undermine the appearance of the coin. You guys are further proof that this ICCS grade is just way too conservative...
I agree that the ICCS grade is conservative. I would probably keep it in the ICCS slab. It is a great grading conversation piece.
BTW, I was going to guess EF40 but the choice for 45 was listed as XF45 instead of EF45. I thought perhaps "XF" was a clue so I took a stab at 45. Nobody guessed 8, 12 or 20. Thanks for the thread.
I just copied the first grades I saw. Personally, I don't distinguish between EF and XF. That's like splitting hairs, especially since some sources show the two grades overlapping. I also can't remember which TPGS uses which terminology. http://coins.about.com/od/coingrading/f/sheldon_scale.htm Ok, I'll curb my excitement...
