I am still not completely sure on the assessment, however I do appreciate your thoughts. I have found mechanical/machine doubling in 1969 s. This one does look flat in some areas but the first strike is raised and the second seems to have a serif however slight. and this coin is very old and worn. I hope you can look again and reasses. Every letter in this one shows imperfections and with the mechanical/machine doubling I only notice one word or the date stamp with the imperfections. Look close at bottom of A and top of feathers. The last eight in the date. In ddo I see that all letters are affected not just a certain area.
I have looked at some 1857 and 1858 error coins graded on ebay and mine looks the same. I have not seen one mechanical/machine doubling in these years that have been graded they are all ddo. Similar ones have sold 700 dollars and up to 6000 dollars. I have also read up on mechanical/machine doubling and this one is different. There is rounding in the C of America. If you comment please do your research. I am going to get it graded in order to be positive. I still want to know what you think. Thank You for reading and all comments.
Get Rick Snow's book. He's the master. Email him your pics and politely ask for help. He may get back to you after this week's Whitman Expo.
I have been looking at the picturs and I beleive there is a 7 under the 8 at the top right you have to look for it but it is there. 1858/7
You have the small letters variety 1858. The only 1858/7's are on large letter varieties. It's a great coin but definitely not an 8/7.
I have looked many times. It is a nice coin but you do not have a discovery speciman. There is zero chance that this is a newly discovered 1858/7. Just submit it for grading and variety attribution. Then you will know what you have.. mechanical doubling or a true double die obverse.
