I used to be a cashier but I recently got a promotion and now I work in the store's money room. I work in a room that holds all of the stores money, which is usually on average around $150,000-$200,000 cash. Now I get to spend my days surrounded by coins and today I had some great finds. Six wheats: 1914, 1944D, 1945S, 1946, 1951, 1954 There was a tray with about 20 halves and one of them was a 90%! In the room there's also a container with all of the foreign coins that have come in. There were about 100 coins and I obviously couldn't take them all but I decided to take this 1949 10 PFENNIG: And lastly, I found my first star note! Not in great condition though: This is the most finds i've ever had from a single day at work and I am so excited that I have this new position. I definitely won't dread going to work anymore.
My moms works cash office on occasion at her job and scores me 90% dimes, some silver nickels and occasional star. Nice haul.
congrats!! sounds like a blast.. will they let you swap out at face value like many tellers in banks are allowed to? try to stay calm when you hear cha-ching all day....
I swap out all my finds for face value. I always carry loose change on me to swap for the coins I want. For the half I just put in 2 quarters.
All the world coins came from rolls and cashiers that may have accepted them from customers. Most of them were canadians but there were also lots of euros. The store is basically losing money for all the foreigns they get. I'm not sure what they will do with all of them but I'll ask my manager about it.
Do you have permission to be doing this while your working? When I worked as a manager in retail if someone was searching through the coins/currency in the cash office while working or swapping out any money at all without someone else present and giving approval they would be fired. I fired someone for doing this exact thing because we had a change machine to sort and count all change and they were continually asking to swap out coinage almost daily. Even though it seems harsh and my personal opinion one way or another aside the store manager considered doing so theft of the companies time and didn't allow the practice to go on.
I'm allowed to do it. There's plenty of moments where there's not really anymore work to do other than give out cash drawers to the cashiers, so during that time it's basically sitting in there and doing nothing. And in the words of the person who trained me in that position, "As long as the store isn't missing money at the end of the night, it's no problem." She's a bit of a collector too, but only keeps any silver she finds.
