Hey everyone. I know it may seem obvious with high value coins, but at what point do you decide if a low-dollar coin is worth having slabbed...even if not having any intention of selling. I always thought that a slabbed coin holds better value than a raw coin. I have a few slabbed coins in my collection, but i bought them slabbed. There are a several coins in my collection that i obtained which i would like to slab, but unsure if it's worth it. For example, 2 coins from my collection. WHat i would consider "low-dollar" since i purchased them for cheap A '47-S washington quarter and a '48-P washington quarter. The 47-S is already slabbed MS65 by PCGS The '48 is not slabbed but in a 2X2. I beleive it would grade equal to the '47-s as it's condition is similar. However an MS65 '48 washington is not really worth a whole hell of a lot.
In the instance of the 1948 Washington, pass on slabbing. You could probably pick up one at a show for less than the cost of slabbing. I usually slab better dates, espeically if I want to be sure that they are genuine. Examples: 1896 S and 1913 S Barber quarters, 1895 O Dime, 1916 D Merc. et cetera. For the modern pieces, I usually just get them already slabbed. Recently I got a 2006 Ms 68 Bison (Satin) and Sacagaear (MS-68 also satin) for less than it would have cost me to salb them. The only time that I would do otherwise is if I thought that I was going to get a monster grade, and then sellit for a profit. However, I have a hard time parting with my coins.
I see what you are saying. Buying them already in slabs might end up being cheaper than buying them raw and having them slabbed.
I have never submitted a coin to be slabbed. For a few raw coins that I consdered "too good" for an airtite I've used coin world PCGS-style slab coin holders as sort of a "self slabbing" technique. Here is an example. http://jpscorner.com/Slab_Style_Coin_Holders.htm#Slab_Holders
depending on who you send the coin to be slabbed by. Send only the best of the best you have or RARE, leave the rest raw or send them to a TPGS that will slab them no matter whats going on with them other then damage like wholes. You can send Coins to the anacs, ana, SEGS and PCI they will grade and snal most coins while stating what has been done to them. like cleaning or in some cases damaged.Its up to you. But if you ask me, IMO its not worth slabbing anything thats not less them 50/60 years old that isnt IYO less then MS60 pending the coin. Basically If you a first time slabber i say go with ANACS or heck even NTC if you looking to save money. But ANACS seem to have the best track record for farness. THIS IS ALL IMO.
As for me I slab my better coins myself and I would only send out a coin to be slabbed by a TPG if I wanted to make sure if it was genuine as Frank was saying. And those coins would be coins like 1909-s vdb 1916-d dime highgrade 1932-d quarter and so on. You can find a lot of high grade coins already slabbed for less then if you sent them of to be slabbed.
WHY slab at all ?? If you must, I suggest that you have a coin worth at least 10k conservatively, have that certified ! Anything below that is a WASTE of money ! Cant you grade ??? Lets put a halt to the hype that has gripped the hobby via television. It is truly disgraceful and will eventually ruin it for the next generation.
