I purchased 10, 4 for me, and 6 for work associates. I can't honestly tell you what the point of these are, other than completing the Westward Journey Nickel series sets. The only bright spot I see is that according to Numismatic News the mint has only sold 54,000 of these sets. There is nothing in them.. 2 business strikes and a proof, but who knows someday they may be worth what I paid for them.
What are they worth????? Newbie here. This is the third year I've purchased this set however I can't find it listed in the "Red Book." Any idea why or am I just not looking in the right place? Dave
Dave: First, welcome. Second, there are a lot of items that the Guide Book/Red Book does not list. I have a set of SBA'a that were mint issued, and they are also not listed.
Is there any way to value these? The only reason I ask is for my "inventory" file. It was nice seeing a local coin store selling the 2004 set for $64. That's more than I paid for all three... Dave
From what I can determine; The 2004 is worth about double (or more) what it sold for ($13.50) the mintage was approximately 100,000 sets. The 2005 is worth about two thirds of the ($13.50) amount it is still selling for, and the mintage is around 400,000 sets. This last one, 2006, sells for ($6.50) and they have sold only about 84,000 of the 350,000 sets they projected. 2006 could be the sleeper. Although as mentioned above, there is really nothing redeeming about the set other than first year of issue business and proof strikes.
I just ordered one after checking to see if my dealer had any today.It's strange to order a set that costs $6.50 and has a ship fee of $4.95. I could have driven to the Mint's Store in D.C. but the gas would have almost equaled the shipping. Oh well,now I will have all three sets...plus this "thing"
the photo you posted is of either the 2004 or 2005 Westward Journey Coin and Medal Set which contains a Proof Sacagawea $1, 2 proof nickels (2004-2005) and a peace medal. This isn't what your buying for $6.95.. This is what your buying!! Edit: oh ok.. my mistake I misread your post..
OK...it showed up today so my set is complete.Of course thats $6.50+$4.95=$11.45 or about $3.82 per nickel.What a deal.:goofer:
There is not much to the '06 set. The proof is the real "sleeper" so with that and the price of the packaging I would put a value at around $1.85.
