Up next I have a Type 6 ANACS Photo Certificate. What do I like about this one? -It has all the parts mentioned previously: a plastic sleeve for the coin, in a 2x2 flip with a note implying that the holder may not be the best choice for long term storage, with the certificate number (F3660N) on a label on the flip. -I found a note in Robert Paul's history of ANACS that from 1979 to June 1986 all MS grading was either 60, 63, 65, 67, or 70. In June 1986 the ANA board agreed to add 61, 62, 64, 66, 68, and 69 (but it took some time to build reference sets to use for grading those new gradations). In hand this coin looks like a 64 today. -The dates on this certificate are interesting: it was graded on 4/19/85 (registered to Arne Kozak). It looks like it was purchased on 5/31/85 from Downeast Coins and there is a note "MS64" - maybe the dealer thought this coin looked better than the 63/63 on the certificate? In the same handwriting on the back, the purchase price is noted for 5/31: $175. $175 seems like a lot for this common Morgan in 1985 - in today's dollars that is about $482. I know that Morgans were pricey in the 80s... -I wish I knew more about this coin's story between 1985 and when I bought it last month Mike
@Paddy54 regarding the ANACS Mexico coin. Cameron Kiefer called several of them samples based on being given out at shows, low-value coins, etc. examples are his ANACS 4.1, 5, and 5.1 (https://www.sampleslabs.com/anacs.html). I've found circumstantial confirmation with database probes showing runs of the same cheap coin in serial # ranges. Some were individually graded some not. I'm calling this ANACS-MEX20c-1-1 462316->462365, MEXICO 1973 Mo 20C, MEXICO, 50 pieces Code: MS65 MS66 MS67 20 24 6 And I'm stealing your photos, "Reported by Paddy54 on CoinTalk".
Next up from my 81S Morgan old slabs box is this one from INGS. I don't have much information on this company, other than the copyright date on the text on the back of the slab is 1987. I don't know when these slabs were actually made though. At a show a dealer had five of these, all with the S-mint Morgans from 1879-1883. I only bought this one but it was neat to see them all together. I think this would grade 63 due to the chatter on the obverse, but I like the attractive rim toning.
Seems like there ought to be a Paramount holder in this thread. This is a recent pick up. Probably more like a 63, but nice rim toning.
I've had PCGS rattlers, OGH, etc, but my favorite are the small size ANACS holders. I only own one right now - and the coin is superb.
