With the new Presidential dollars coming up in 2007, and the continued, albeit reduced, mintage of the Sacagaweas, do you think this will have any particular effect on the value of Sackies? I'm aware that Sackies will be minted at a ratio of 1:3 to the Presidential dollars, but with lack of coins being issued for circulation since 2001, it seems to me that Sackies could head the way of Kennedies. Minted, but can't be discontinued for political reasons.

The legislation also includes a clause about businesses and facilities who do business with the Feds having all venues dollar friendly and the coins available. Don't know if anything will come of this, especially since the Post Office used the next day to announce the removal of their coin operated machines.

I'm a Sac collector and I'm afraid the Prez $ will hurt interest in the Sac just because its new & a better design (IMO... and I'm a Sac fan!).

It should be the lowest mintage year, so this might offset a decline, but I think the Sac may go the way of the Susan B. if there's even a fraction of interest from collectors of State Quarters. I think the 2001 S will definitely drop in value... the price was ridiculous anyway!

    I hope I'm wrong because I have amassed 300 uncirc Sacs!:rolling:

How long will they continue minting Sacs? 25 years??

Anything more than 5 years will feel like 25 years, or possibly an eternity.

I'm sure that the U.S. Mints will be striking Sacagawea $1 coins long after the Presidential $1 coin series has been completed.America should do the honourable thing & put the $1 note to rest, just like Canada,Australia,& New Zealand have.Get rid of the $1 note, then that way the $1 coin will really circulate & the people would get used to a $1 coin.

It took us a while over here in New Zealand to get used to the idea of having a $1 coin in circulation, but 15 years later,we haven't looked back.$1 coins are among the most commonly used coins over here.A lot of the 1990 $1 coins are still turning up,but at least they are being used.

I was actually surprised that the Sacs were going to be continued with the announcement of the Presidential Dollars, but that's the law. (Literally.)

We like them-- Thalia Elizabeth calls it the "Mommy-Baby Dollar" and it, like her, debuted in 2000, so there is a sentimental attachment. But other than the 2001-S, they're not very costly and I doubt that they will go there anytime soon. I would be OK if they quietly went away; the only thing that will really get them out into circulation, as Aidan points out, is dropping the $1 bill. I don't know if that will happen in Thalia's lifetime, never mind mine.

Yes, it will be interesting to see how many 2007 Sacs are actually minted.

I like the design but think it looks a lot better in proof than in uncirculated. After reading this thread I decided to take a few pics of my single 2001 S.I have two others in the clad and silver sets that are better but it was easier to photograph this one, despite the "right cheek" issues.I'll admit that the design of the obverse is a bit cartoonish but I really like the eagle reverse.

That is a very nice Proof Sacagawea $1 you have got there.I suppose that you are avidly collecting them, even though you may not find some date & mintmark combinations in circulation.I can guess that you will also be collecting the Presidential $1 coins as well.

Am I right in saying so,or am I way off the mark?

Where do you folk getting the idea that the 2007 Sac will be a low mintage? I expect it to be the second highest mintage date. I'm expecting the mint to strike at LEAST 200 million of each of the Presidents next year because like the SBA and th Sac they will over produce. (They think that everyone will love them and hoard them like the state quarters.) If they do, then that means that by law they MUST strike 400 million Sac dollars. Roughly four times as many as they made in 2001. If they FAIL to circulate then the Treasury will be sitting on a THIRTY year supply of small dollars and we will see the 2008 mintages plummet. Even so the 2008 and later Sac mintages will still be considerably higher than the 2002 - 2006 mintages.

Why? Well since 2002 the number of Sacs ordered in rolls and bags from the Mint has been fairly steady at around five to eight million coins per year. I would expect the demand for the President dollars to be about the same. That means they will strike 20 to 32 million President dollars each year. That means they HAVE to strike 10 to 16 million Sac dollars each year. (of which 5 to 8 million will be purchased by collectors and the rest go into the Treasury vaults or never ending sale by the mint.

    Aidan,
I do collect all U.S. coins, circulation and proof as well as the commemoratives.Sacagewea dollars, like the Kennedy half dollars have not been released into circulation for many years but occasionally find their way into the world of commerce anyway.:) I prefer coins that have been made for day to day use, especially ancients, but like to collect others just for their beauty, including medals and tokens.
As far as the Presidential series,I don't plan on buying individual issues to put in an album but will buy the mint and proof sets when they are released. In fact,I have every one going back to the mid 1950's.

Good points Conder. Sometimes I think that all 5 to 8 million of those coins are on eBay at the same time though!

I'd certainly like to see some of the '07 Sacs make it into circulation, but I think that the average person is just too resistant to the idea.

They probably should have ended the Sacagaweas with the start of the Presidential dollars. I wonder why they kept them in the program?

There was no legal provision (Congressional approval) to stop minting them.

The law authorising the Presidential coins mandates a 1:3 ratio of Sacagaweas to Presidential coins. Don't know why they didn't get rid of the Sacagaweas, but I'd imagine it was for some political reason or another.

KLJ,the Sacagawea $1 has a very nice design.I reckon that it would have made more sense to stop the printing of $1 notes,as it would save a lot of ink & paper at the Bureau of Engrving & Printing,& saving a lot of money in the process.
